TN: 2010 Cabot Vineyards Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

#1 Post by andy velebil » February 9th, 2013, 7:46 pm

Decanted this 1 hour before drinking. Plenty of rhubarb and cherries dominate the palate with some pinot funk. Not quite 3 hours in some dusty tannins showed up on the back end and finish. There is plenty of acidity across the palate and finish which really keeps this lively and fresh. The finish has a nice, but not overdone, amount of spice. Though it doesn't possess all the complexity of it's big brother, the Nash Mill Pinot Noir, this is remarkably constant throughout. I should note to decant this as there was a lot of sediment already. Considering this is the first vintage of Pinot John Cabot has made, I'd say he's done really well on both this and the Nash Mill.

Thanks for posting your note. I opened this last night as well, and I think you have described the wine well. One thing I will add is that I found the wine to be bigger and more powerful than I was expecting given the appellation. But I was surprised, not disappointed.
"Oh, bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeosity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now. As I slooshied, I knew such lovely pictures!" ~Alex

I emailed John about this wine recently and he said he was drinking well and to go ahead and pop one and check it out. It sounds like there's plenty of joy to be had at this time.

2010 was a warm finish in Anderson Valley. This wine is fairly big boned for the appelation, but I think shows nice complexity with the rhubarb showing the less ripe end of the spectrum. The wine did drop a decent bit of tartrate crystals so decanting is advised. These are great vineyards with very experienced talented growers, so it makes my job easy.
Cheers

  • 2010 Cabot Vineyards Pinot Noir Anderson Valley - USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley (5/25/2013)
Interesting, I see bottle variation with Cabot (pinot & syrah) and this bottle was no different. But the good news is every bottle is terrific. Decanted for 1 hour for air and to drop the tartaric crystals and some sediment. Different than the previous three bottles, flavor profile was dominated by a delicious bing cherry and less of the tart berry. Acid seems to be integrating and shows as more balanced. Yummy goodness.

I agree. Very nice Pinot. 92 pts. for me. One bottle left.

I didn't know it was John's first Pinot vintage. Kudos.

Hey buddy, it has been too long. I haven't had a chance to taste these. Why don't you come to the office and I'll pop something you haven't had.

Cheers,

Jason

Tried this a few months ago, and the quality and QPR were undeniable. Good juice.

The Nash is sold out. I like the AV anyway. It's all good.
