Who is the greatest Riesling producer in the world?

#1 Post by Bill H o o p e r » September 15th, 2012, 12:50 pm

Who is the greatest (or your favorite) Riesling producer in the world?

Use any criteria that you desire (Historical significance, versatility in range, recent performance, ageability and development, whatever…) This is not a Top 100 list and I’ve tried to include regional possibilities that may not be familiar to everyone, but I think that I’ve included most (if not everyone’s) favorites regardless of style preference. If I’ve missed yours, write it in (and explain yourself). Mostly though, I’m interested in why you voted the way you did.

Unfortunately, these are far too many options for a poll.

Thanks!
Bill

Don't really know which I'd vote for! I guess there are too many alternatives and styles and ... so on. Probably I am more a Mosel off-dry guy.
Takeing the current 2011-Grosses-Gewächs-Hype into account Klaus Peter Keller from Rheinhessen must be Greatest Riesling Producer in the world.
Maybe? I am not so sure about that rolleyes

I can only narrow it to four: Jj Prum, Rheinhold Haart, Selbach and Trimbach.

I have more Willi Schaefer than any other producer, followed by Prum, then Grunhaus, then Muller.

But Muller would be higher up the list if his wines were cheaper!

Zind Humbrecht for me, based purely on the variety of styles and relative quantity I've tasted. I'm sure there are better I've yet to discover or taste more widely (JJ Prum, Muller and Keller would be in the frame here). Grunhauser is also a personal fave.

On a slight tangent, if I had to choose wines made from only one grape (or blends thereof) for the rest of my life, it would have to be Riesling. But that's probably another thread.

Once this has run it would be interesting (if silly) to see which individual wine (not vintage) we viewed as greatest....

E.g. Prum WS auslese, etc etc.

It depends on the vineyard. We had a great 2002 Dr. Loosen Piesporter Goldtropfchen on Friday night.

This question brings to mind Kermit Lynch's discussion of 'best' wines in Adventures ... . His response is "The best for what?" (or similar, I don't have the text before me). Those of us who like these wines can count our blessings, in any event, that there are so many good producers.

If I could drink only one riesling day in and day out, I think it would be Hirtzberger Singerriedel. So I'll go with Hirtzberger (with JJ Prum close behind).

Flawed poll (even though it's not a poll)! There are too many greats, and none of them tower over all the rest the way DRC, Yquem, Petrus, etc. arguably do for their respective grapes.

I agree with Dick Krueger - it comes down to the vineyard, just as with Burgundies. And the vineyards have such different personalities in most cases that it is really impossible to pick a "best" imo.

That probably would be Reinhold Haart's Goldtrøpfchen. He and Ernie Loosen are good friends (as told to me when I visited them both in the 90-ies) so maybe they mixed up some bottles on one of their encounters (aka bashes). [cheers.gif]

And there are many great choices here. I personally have a very big soft spot for Prager.

Keith has the correct answer, there are many, many excellent producers who make almost equivalently excellent wines.

But, in the spirit of the question, I'll give it a shot.

If it is over the last 60 years (the oldest I've tasted) then it would be Müller Scharzhofberger.

If it is over the last 20, my personal choice is Knoll Schutt. Consistently thrilling and always excellent even in the most trying vintages.
ITB-ish.

OK, for my choices: Trimbach Clos Ste. Hune (subdivision of Rosacker), JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Egon Muller Schwarzhofberger, Franz Hirzberger Singerreidel.

Given the caveat that it is of course not really a meaningful question I'll play nonetheless. My stated (totally subjective) criteria are that I am choosing the producers of those wines that immediately came to mind as the finest riesling experiences of my life. Obviously there are many producers I've never tried and others whom I have tried but perhpas never when a wine was at peak, etc.

First Place: Trimbach
Honorable Mentions: Prager, Egon Muller

That said, for combination of cost and quality I'm probably buying more Willi Schaefer than anyone else these days.

Would riesling be the most terroir sensitive varietal? I just can't relate to there being a single greatest riesling when the expression is so varied. An Alsace is so removed from the typical Moselle I don't even consider them as being comparable.

Mike,

It very well could be the most sensitive to terroir. Then combine that with the spectrum of different styles they are made in, from Trocken to TBA, from quite acidic to soft and mellow, and you have a real cornucopia of treats. (OK, I had to check the spelling of "cornucopia"! [whistle.gif] ).

Paul, it has to be the greatest varietal, not to get confused with it being able to produce the greatest wine, that accolade belongs elsewhere.

I think Mike makes a good point. The question is a bit like asking 'Who is the Greatest [Cabernet, Pinot, Chardonnay] Producer in the World." Especially when discussing varieties like Pinot, Riesling, and Chardonnay, which can be relatively high-fidelity media for terroir expression, focusing on the variety instead of the region or sub-region makes it practically impossible to come to a reasonable conclusion.
