do you have much experience with this producer? not much out there, but the notes i have read seemed to be rather mixed.

Yes notes are all over the place. Only had it once vs Lafon Charmes and I thought it edged the Lafon (both 10s). And I am a big fan of Lafon Charmes.

Agree 100%. I think the step up to the Cuvee Prestige is worth the minor uptick in price. These wines age beautifully. And for those that like rustic charm, this is it.

I visited this fall. We last covered them in 2005/2006, when David Shildknecht gave them very good reviews, but since then, nothing. Which is bizarre, given how good I found the wines to be. When one looks into it, one also learns that Pascal Roblet was one of the first to stop hedging his vineyards, along with Leroy etc etc. So this is not some sort of "rising star" but actually a first-rate domaine hiding in plain sight.

Those are magic words - cassoulet + aged Madiran.

Edited to add '94, while not considered a great year, was good for Montus (according to my husband, who knows about these things.) Can't go wrong with Montus in general. We have mags of the '95 Cuvee Prestige waiting for the next cassoulet.

Keep in mind, I’m a newbie, but this was fun stuff for me. Had a real case of dumb luck yesterday. Stopped by the store in town and noticed one lone bottle sitting next to a group of wines I’d looked at 4x already in the last 2 weeks, so knew it was new. I’d seen the name from reading Paso threads here on berserkers, but my phone wouldn’t connect to either winecellar or vivino and my wife was waiting in the car so I just went for it. 2016 Halter Ranch cab for $26. There are no 2016’s anywhere on any of the shelves at this shop, so that was the first thing that caught my eye. I grabbed it. Figured why not. Once I was home and able to look it up, I saw that when it was available it regularly sold for $55-60. After decanting for ~45 minutes we tried it. SO good! I won’t even try to wax poetic the way you guys can about flavors and undercurrents and textures and layers, but in simpleton terms, it was damn tasty. Went back today and asked if they had any more. Nope. All gone. Don’t even have any 2017’s. Scoured the internet, but nothing to be found. Glad I at least got to try it.

Not sure, he makes a Robardelle-based 1er Cru blend that today goes by the name "Les Vignes de Madeleine", so not sure if that's the new manifestation of St. Jean or a different cuvée.... I'll ask him in due course.

He and Cécile separated in the mid-2000s, but yes, I believe that was the case.
