Definitely! It was the largest LT production since 2003, I think, so there's a ton floating around.

I thought the 17 Bouchard Chevy was very good at the Paulee tasting, nice pickup.

Thanks, Alan. I debated on the Cabotte but the pricing is so good on the Monty it's almost the same. Just couldn't justify a 70% premium over the Chevy and only 15% less than the Monty. Is it really worth it?

They are pretty much equal—Cabotte and Monty. I have a soft spot for it, as it used to be relatively cheap and I like the raciness of Chevalier.

2003 was actually a very small production year! IIRC there are over 2,000 cases of the 2017, and I'm not sure when that was last the case. Not even in 1999 though.

Yes, it's a bit out-of-whack these days, and I wouldn't open my own bottles for a while. The fact that e.g. 2003 turned out very well in the end gives me confidence to just forget my bottles.

That said, I'm more and more convinced that, rather than just being pretty and charming and forward but less serious, 2008 is the genuinely great Rayas vintage of the decade.

Had to get another case of the 2018 Raul Perez Atalier after the discussion on another thread. We drank through a case in the last year, and with no 2019 vintage in sight, I don't want to run out!

I got six on release in the UK (no one wanted it) and drank five of them far too quickly (I've subsequently had to back-fill). The 2008 is beautifully expressive and perfumed right now, and I often drink it in restaurants in France when the price is attractive. That said, I think it's still getting better. The more Rayas I have drunk, the more I come to think that the older, the better. When it is young it can be amazing, but—and especially in the warm vintage—its pedigree vis a vis the other Reynaud wines, and even vis a vis other Châteauneuf wines, is less apparent. After 30+ years, Rayas is just immensely ethereal, with totally melted tannins and an exquisitely satiny, enveloping texture that is hard to describe. Even if the similarities are more important than the differences, I think that's even more true of the Louis Reynaud-era wines than the more extracted, muscular wines made by Jacques in the '80s and '90s. Emmanuel's style is suppler and less chunky than Jacques, so will his wines end up being more similar to Louis' at maturity? When the 2005, 2008, 2009 etc are thirty years old, we will see—he had to do a lot of replanting when he took over.

To answer your question more concisely: you can't go wrong opening it now or in five to ten years. But if you do, follow the Reynaud protocol: open the day before, pour our a small taste, re-cork and leave at cellar temperature until service.

Wow that’s for all that detail on the 2008 Rayas, William! I scored a bottle several months ago at, of all places, a wine bar on the Redneck Riviera in Florida*! And at a ridiculously great price, the owner was letting some of his personal stash go!

This is great. I love Rayas. And '08 Rayas was one of the best wines I opened last year and one I'd like to buy more of.

4x 1979 La Dominique

I've been buying the occasional bottle from TCWC over the years and enjoying them but they put the remainder of their stock up for sale in the auction so I either had to pony up or do without.
