My niece was born in 2019, so I decided to buy her a double magnum of Pontet Canet for her rehearsal dinner. Since her father told me she won’t be allowed to date until she is 35, I hope it has the legs for the long term.

what if it turns out she's more of a Burg gal? or maybe she's into box wine? might want to cover all the bases. [cheers.gif]

Well, old Lanson is a different matter, and frequently one of the longest-lived Champagnes. The house used to own some of the best holdings of any of the grandes marques. The issue was that they were sold to Moet in 1990, who flipped the brand six months later but kept the vineyards. Today, they are getting back on form.

Can you clue me in on Richter a bit? I always thought of them as kind of a bottom-of-the-second-tier producer. But not too long ago I tried a bottle of Veldenzer Elisenberg spatlese that was really quite impressive. Made me wonder if my earlier forays had just been with the wrong bottlings. Or maybe they’ve been upping their game recently? Would appreciate any thoughts.

4 x 2019 Max Ferd Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese
1 x 2019 Max Ferd Richter Brauneberger Juffer Auslese
1 x 2019 Max Ferd Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese***
Can you clue me in on Richter a bit? I always thought of them as kind of a bottom-of-the-second-tier producer. But not too long ago I tried a bottle of Veldenzer Elisenberg spatlese that was really quite impressive. Made me wonder if my earlier forays had just been with the wrong bottlings. Or maybe they’ve been upping their game recently? Would appreciate any thoughts.
I had the same experience with earlier bottlings, but had a couple from recent vintages (2012 and 2015 IIRC) that I've enjoyed. I was talking with Robert Panzer, and apparently since Konstantin Richter has taken over wine production (not sure when the transition occurred) the wines have been getting better. Fortunately, the style remains traditional and the pricing remains very reasonable, even with tariffs and recent U.S. wine distribution issues. I'm not someone who tries to chase scores/awards, but the 2015 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett won the 2015 Kabinett Cup and the 2017 vintage of the same wine got awarded best kabinett by Gault Millau in 2017. Likely isn't a coincidence, hence I thought I should take another look into their wines.

Very helpful, thanks. Please post notes whenever you decide to sample some.

That might be interesting! Not the easiest vintage, to say the least, but they (Anne Gros' father and uncle) made good wines back then. The 1959 is one of the best non-DRC / Leroy Richebourgs I ever tasted.

Yeah, I thought it was worth a shot. Good levels (well, one was 5cm but the others between 2-3). Incidentally, the best Richebourg I’ve had was another 1970: Groffier(!) well, perhaps not necessarily the best, but the most memorable in any case. The perfect wine for the occasion (noticed a drip from the capsule so I panicked, poured it carefully into an empty bottle, and brought it along to share over a pizza at my local Italian with a friend + kids after nursery pickup - it was shockingly good).
