Our local usually-Bordeaux group once again diverted and we had a bunch of multiple-producer Volnay (1998 - 2006) and some white Burgundy for dinner last week. I was impressed with the Lafarge that was in the mix and I chanced upon and bit on a couple of ...

I have never had these before. Is it better to age time? If so, for how long would you age them?

The tempier rose? I like them with a year or two of age personally, but they can be enjoyed right away. I believe there was a thread on this a bit ago but on my phone so can’t find it right now.

Looking forward to getting some Taittinger Comtes but a little concerned at the pricing.

Congratulations! We drank a 750 for our 30th anniversary two years ago, and it was definitely showing it’s age. A well stored mag should hopefully be in good shape, but I would not decant more than an hour or so ahead, mostly to take it off the sediment. Hope your day, and the wine, are both fabulous! I totally agree with Alan’s advice. Additionally, in a perfect world, you would stand it up several days (or more) in advance and figure out a way to serve it at something cooler than room temperature (ideally high 50’s to mid 60’s in my book). With the exception of some Burg with really fine tannins I think the standing up thing is overrated but lots of people sweat by it. The serving temperature is a little more of an issue for me, but you’ll have more important things to worry about that day so I wouldn’t sweat it too much. Also, you and your fiancé/wife might be the only ones geeky enough to notice or care.

I’m guessing you’ve got this covered, but there is probably a 10-15% chance the wine is bad (could be TCA, poor storage, or whatever). I’d probably have a backup plan - likely something younger that will be more of a sure thing - like a second serve in tennis.

Congratulations on the wedding! Hope to see you around Chicago at some point.

Thanks guys! One other thing to run past the WB brain trust... I'm flying direct from Chicago to Portland, ME (where the wedding is). I think that best I can do in terms of transport is wrap the bottle in a bunch of plastic wrap/clothes/soft things within a suitcase and minimize its time out of optimal storage conditions. It's still at HDH and I'll go pick it up the day before my flight. I realize that's not ideal, but think it's the best I can do. Any reason to do something different?

And yes on the back-up. We also got some double mags of Pol Roger and some Beaucastel that's 10-15 years old.

I’ve traveled a lot with 750’s but the size of your bottle presents some unique challenges. I might contact HDH ahead of time and see if they can pack it in a styrofoam shipper box you can then check —after asking the curbside folks to slap fragile stickers all over it. Or if you have a big enough suitcase, you can pack clothes around the shipper box to be extra (perhaps overly) safe.

Some people would be concerned with bottle shock, but I’ve opened tons of bottles right after shipping or air travel and not noticed much of a difference. I think bottle shock can be much more acute with old red burgs where the sediment is so fine it clouds up the bottle in a way that can take weeks to settle.

That’s a good idea. I’m going out there almost a week early, so will have time to stand it up and let it settle once I arrive. I’ll give HDH a ring tomorrow. Thanks, and let’s definitely get together to drinks some wine in Chicago soon!

1 bottle 1985 Talbot $67 all-in at auction
13 bottles 2009 Ridge Geyserville $33 all-in at auction

I was winning a 3 bottle lot of the 1995 Sociando Mallet, but someone named “alfalf” outbid me. Sound like anyone we know?

Ha, I have a wine auction nom de guerre, or a doppleganger!

Funny enough, that actually is not me. Bummer you missed those.

Patrick, I’m waiting for post-summer delivery of a couple of 85s (Rauzan and Haut-Bailly). I’m high on those 85s.
We missed out on the 95 SM during a recent local SM vertical, due to too many bottles and not enough drinkers. Anyway, I’ve some stored away, is it drinking well?

Ramon, I had the 95 SM last year and I really really liked it, more than the 96 (for current drinking at least), and more than any of the 00-03s. It was ready to enjoy too, not super structured like so many 95s are...

Robert, too funny that wasn’t you, it seemed like it had to be you give the user name and our shared fondness for this Chateau.
