1978 Ducru. For some reason this wine really sucked me in...objectively it was good but not great: a reasonable amount of dark fruit left, but neither as concentrated or long as other top quality aged Bordeaux’s have been. Typical St. Julien notes of leather, cedar, and earth. I was also trying to decide between Eucalyptus and Menthol, but at this point am leaning toward Menthol. All in all I would normally call it a 92 or 93 point wine, but there was something beguiling about it I kept trying to put my finger on... While the fruit had probably faded somewhat from peak, secondary and tertiary elements had fully made up for it. The wine was superbly balanced, which I think was key to its charm. I remember thinking the same thing about a 1995 or 1996 Lafleur I’d tried in London six years ago—my first crack at Lafleur. Not a particularly great Pomerol vintage but there was something about the balance of the wine that I’ve never forgotten. For me, I think the Ducru’s spell was that it represented everything I love about old Bordeaux—a perfect representation of what sucked me into wine in the first place. And of course there is the absurdity of finding them for $70ish a bottle at auction.
Welcome to the board Mark. Nice note, and I completely understand how a wine that objectively is less than thrilling can thrill nonetheless. I am sure I would have loved this too.

Thanks Neal! I’m pretty excited to try a few other ‘78’s I picked up in the latest HDH auction—should be fun to compare.

Interesting, bud. I was just gifted a bottle of that very vintage. while not my style of wine, was curious how or if these wines could age. Please post a note!

I opened a 2013 Daniel Ramos Zerberos Del Tiemblo "Los Chorrancos" (garnacha)

Purchased at Bay Grape in Oakland at the recommendation of the owner.

Seriously gorgeous wine.

2001 Chateau Musar

Still not smittten by this winery, as much as I try. The VA is too much for me.

Dönhoff Tonschiefer Dry Slate 2017, wow! And only $25. [worship.gif]

Incredible grip and spin on the palate, amazing complexity. My friend who drinks primarily Dauvissat and Ramonet is now a DRY Riesling convert.

1999 Paul Bara Champagne Grand Cru Comtesse Marie de France Bouzy. Jammed packed with apricot and grapefruit goodness, mellow and luxurious. More white burg than fizzy, but just gorgeous to drink.

Had the Musar from 375 at a restaurant before my wife and I went to watch the Bama game. Opened a 2000 Chateau Cambon La Pelouse. Generally a very solid Cru, 2010 was strong, but this 2000 has aged quite nicely as well. A bit more wood than I would want, but overall quite nice.

Hubert de Bouard is now consulting, so the wine is now off my purchase list.

2015 Chateau de Nages, Nimes Blanc, Vielles Vignes
Dry, austere and a bit oaky to me. Slightly tart fruit, mineral mouthfeel. Reminded me of a California chardonnay in the same price range ($15). Had some good online reviews. (But reading the back label lauding the wine's virtues after tasting it was laughable.) Disappointing.

How was that, Neal? 1974 and 1991 I had in the last 18m both fantastic - with the 1991 pretty shockingly youthful.

I’m getting pretty jazzed up over some 1965 Charles Krug I bought in an HDH auction - having it delivered on Wednesday. I think that was RM’s last year there before he split with Peter to do his own thing. Crossing my fingers!

2014 Sojourn, Chardonnay, Sangiacomo Vineyard, SC

Delicious wine. Nice balance of acidity and mouthfeel. Some creaminess and toast, balanced with pectin and lemon curd. Great food wine. This wine is in a really nice place right now.

I did not hate this Rolland wine:

2008 Chateau Malescot Saint Exupery

I think the more classic vintage saved the wine as I have flat out hated other vintages. Still more oak and gloss than I want in a Bordeaux, but this wine showed a Cab Franc profile that I enjoyed. Have no clue how much, if any, CF is in the blend.

2009 Kutch Pinot, Falstaff Vineyard

Had some bad luck with 09’s. Trying to drink them all. First taste was scary. Big swirling, opened up. Turned into a terrific wine.

2016 BlueBird Hill, Pinot Noir, Zenith Vineyard - it's time to start tasting through the 16's I made for BBH, as they will be released in a couple months. Zenith can be quite a monster when it comes to structure and I am glad to see the fine, but ample tannins are coming into their own. And the oak, at 30% new, isn't too much...could probably go with less toast, but the sweetness of the oak plays well off the structure of the wine. The fruit is still very much primary and typical Eola Hills black cherry and savory. This wine will be sold out and probably all drunk before it peaks. I hope there are a few patient folk who lay it down for eight years.

With a quiet dinner with the wife and kids last night. The bubbly is notably focused, tight and citrus dominated (though by no means shrill or ungiving; the red, though young, with around 45 minutes aeration in a decanter, showed well.

Over dinner with the wife & 3 sons last night; the young ‘09 Cristal is very enjoyable indeed (albeit in a bit of a mindless way); while this bottle of ‘01 Hermitage La Chapelle was materially fuller, deeper and more open than one 2 weeks ago.

2002 Magdelaine - beautiful, lush nose. The palate shows good fruit, however. there is a thinness along with a green streak and dusty tannins. Strong resemblance to a Loire Cab Franc. Liked it a lot with our short ribs.

2000 Haut Bergey: Beautiful nose of cassis, pepper, licorice out of the gate. Garnet colour. Very smooth on palate. Quite enjoyable. DID seem a bit thin, lacking structure at times but overall, very nice. Drinking well but I don't see it improving.

Pouilly-Fumé 2017 | La Chantereine | Henri Bourgeois

Very young but still tasted nice. Notes of gooseberries, lychee, peach, flint. high acidity medium + body

We had it some burritos that were spicy. Great match

Brought back a great memory of tasting this vintage with Mike Lamborn on the porch at his house. A terrific fellow, and an excellent wine. Give it 2+ hrs of air to let it open up fully, or continue to hold.

2002 Magdelaine - beautiful, lush nose. The palate shows good fruit, however. there is a thinness along with a green streak and dusty tannins. Strong resemblance to a Loire Cab Franc. Liked it a lot with our short ribs.
Yup. I dig this vintage of Magdelaine very much.
I can see this being right in your wheelhouse.

2016 Pierre Henri Morel Cotes du Rhone Villages Laudun Blanc.
Actually opened this the other night with my “Florida Fish of the Week”, but finishing it up today. Pretty decent white CDR. (~$15 at TotalWine) with Grenache, Rousanne, Viognier (40,30,30). We enjoyed it with the fish and today it was nice by itself and with a little cheese and wheat thins. (versatile!). Subtle fruit and herbs, mineral, maybe even a bit “oily” in the mouthfeel. Bought it mostly because we stayed near Laudun for a couple of weeks a couple of decades ago and it brought back some good memories. While there, this is how we got our table wines at the Laudun wine cooperative:

1998 Clos du Mont Olivet La Cuvee du Papet

My wine fridge has a big problem with humidity, and this label was moldy to the point of almost being unrecognizable. I was pleasantly shocked upon removing the capsule to find a completely clean, mold free cork. Taking that as a good omen for things to come, I removed the cork (one piece!), and poured into our nice glasses. Corked ☹️ Tried to give it an hour or so to see if it could move past it, because it seemed slight. But the smell of the taint unfortunately grew stronger with time.
