How did the 78/79 DdC and the 83 LMHB show? Thanks!
I didn't take good notes, but from memory, 1978 DdC and 1983 LMHB were very good and excellent, respectively. The 1979 DdC was corked according to the those that poured into their stem wares (I didn't pour).
Thanks for the report!
FWIW, I thought both 78 DDC and 83 LMHB were outstanding. As was the very young 1994 HB and another fabulous bottle of 79 Haut Bailly from Jay’s TCWC stash.

2011 Matthiasson Merlot Red Hen Vineyard - Challenged my preconceptions of Napa Merlot and was absolutely compelling. Nose of Earth and cola with great balance and acidity. One of the most memorable bottles of the year.

Ramon, how was your Pape Clement? I have a bottle I’m planning to open with my brother next week, probably with a 99 as well.

I brought this bottle, and it was off and some thought had too much VA. (I like a little VA personally.) Not the usual red fruit and minerality and sheer flavor it typically shows with air. I’ve had this many times though, and a good bottle is revelatory.

2010 Pegau Reserve. New this wine was on the young side, but was anxious to try first bottle of six purchased. After a one hour decant was drinking lovely, although perhaps a bit too brett forward at this stage of the life cycle.

Volatile was mentioned by some. But some air time helped a bit. The 2 or 3 that I can recall having had before were really good.

Thanks, Jeff, I appreciate the compliment. That one is long gone. I just checked my inventory at the warehouse and at the shipper, and not a bottle at either location. 5-8 years continues to be a sweet spot for the Black Cats.

2015 Tiberio Pecorino - What a find. In my top 10 Italian producer.
2008 Clendenen Family Nebbiolo "the pip" - Jim killed it when this. lovely rose petals, red cherry nose. Incredible depth, the tannins have mellowed, crunchy. Reminded me of a 15yr old Monprivato!

1991 Chapoutier La Mordoree: sweet dark tertiary fruit; seamless and graceful; you await this complexity that you’re sure will unfurl with a few more minutes in the glass... and it never comes; good not great, and an excellent place to stop buying Chapoutier

2001 Chateau Lynch Bages - Starting to hit its drinking window, classic Pauilliac, delicious

2006 Chateau Leoville Poyferre - Still quite young, a bit glossy, decent dinner party Bordeaux

2008 Levet La Chavaroche - Marc and I loved it, everyone else, meh - classic gamey, funky Levet

1995 Chateau de Fieuzal - Quite nice, archetype Graves with earthy, dusty notes.

2008 Chateau d'Armailhac - Obvioulsy young, but a solid Pauilliac with good structure, dark cassis and pencil

Middle of the week wine...

2014 Chateau des Quartz, by lafon and Oliver Merlin. Nice wine, no rotten eggs, not as mineral, little bit of oak and fruit. Not a great QPR, but which burgundy is?

2000 Clos des Goisses. I do so love champagne. This was just delightful. Mellow and darkish and rich, brightened by well judged acidity. Really, really lovely beverage

Thanks for the note. I'll have to give another bottle a try. I had my one and only Red Hen (I forget which vintage) a few years ago and really wanted to like it after reading all of the good reviews, but to my taste it was too red-fruited and sweet.

Opened 2013 Domaine Serene Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir. Little nose and little flavor on the first two sips. After about 10 minutes, the wine starts to flesh out, gaining some body, teasing with light red fruits and the acidity kicks in on the short finish. At thirty minutes, red fruits are joined by hints of black fruits, kitchen spice and the finish extending beyond 30 seconds. At 45 minutes, black fruits are dominant on the one minute finish, the last 15 seconds of which have spice provided by the acidity. Open an hour before drinking and maybe decant for the same amount of time. It's a youngster. For sipping now, the finish is a little short, but should go well with food. I'm thinking 2025 should be the big show time for this wine.

1983 Trimbach CFE VT (label fell off while chilling) was as good as ever, still quite youthful and very powerful.

1990 La Conseillante was exotic, full of Asian spices. The 1970 was in good shape - not as good as it once was but really enjoyable.

This was the 2nd good 1970 we had this week - the other was a Pape Clement that was really excellent.

I actually thought about you while drinking the wine. It had that bell pepper note you love, but it was less obnoxious than it often is, and the wine otherwise was spot on. I enjoyed it very much, but suspect you would have been over the moon. Very much alive and vibrant, at a perfect stage of maturity, and textbook Paulliac (except for that pepper thing, which is not in my textbook). If you see a bottle, I encourage you to pick it up (and may even do so myself)

2013 Rivers Marie Old Summa Pinot Noir. Disappointing-one dimensional.

2012 EMH Black Cat. Still decanting . First sip after 1 hour ( yeah I know , too soon). Good but a little "tight". Will revisit in another hour or so.

Update . Super yummy after another hour in the decanter .

Krug 163 x 2 - round, open, chalky, citrus, good depth, drinking well now.
Dauvissat Foret 2010 - no premox, in great shape, lemon, pear, iodine, chalk, super length, ready to drink.
l'Evangile 1998 - drinking really well, at the early stage of maturity, ash, blue and black fruits, earth, already profound, will be amazing with another decade.
Bonneau Celestins 1995 - phenomenal and a point, with notes of beef blood, olives, concentrated red and black fruit but with plenty of acidic lift to keep it fresh and focused. A WOTY candidate.

1999 Verite La Joie. I was looking forward to this served with prime rib. Totally disappointing. A lot of funk on the nose. Double decanted for three hours. No improvement. Not much fruit. Lots of anise with baking spices. Initially tart with virtually no finish.

2007 Vilmart CdC - Could barely get a glass, was finished by the others. Vilmart CdCs just disappear.
2010 Dauvissat Chablis Foret - Gorgeous, sublime, WOTN.
2011 Rodriguez Escolma blanco - Richer style compared to Texia. More Batard Monty style.
2010 Lafon Volnay Santenots du milieu - Needed a 1 hour decant, '10s legendary

2016 Yvon Metras Beaujolais Madame Germaine. A clean bottle that was quite pretty, actually.

1978 Ducru. For some reason this wine really sucked me in...objectively it was good but not great: a reasonable amount of dark fruit left, but neither as concentrated or long as other top quality aged Bordeaux’s have been. Typical St. Julien notes of leather, cedar, and earth. I was also trying to decide between Eucalyptus and Menthol, but at this point am leaning toward Menthol. All in all I would normally call it a 92 or 93 point wine, but there was something beguiling about it I kept trying to put my finger on... While the fruit had probably faded somewhat from peak, secondary and tertiary elements had fully made up for it. The wine was superbly balanced, which I think was key to its charm. I remember thinking the same thing about a 1995 or 1996 Lafleur I’d tried in London six years ago—my first crack at Lafleur. Not a particularly great Pomerol vintage but there was something about the balance of the wine that I’ve never forgotten. For me, I think the Ducru’s spell was that it represented everything I love about old Bordeaux—a perfect representation of what sucked me into wine in the first place. And of course there is the absurdity of finding them for $70ish a bottle at auction.

Popped a couple of 2016 Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blancs with a whole mess of fresh stone crab claws and salty butter. Excellent pairing.

Finished the night with a tried and true 2000 Chateau Cantemerle.
