2007 Le Vieux Donjon CdP
2012 Turley Petite Syrah Library Vineyard
2014 Peter Michael Les Pavots

I opened some Fun, delicious wine at a going-away party for a friend moving to Denver.
I really liked the petite syrah, and the CdP was my last bottle, so somewhat bittersweet

36 hours late, but here's the lineup from a dinner I held at home on Friday with some of the Toronto crew.

2008 Larmandier-Bernier Champagne Grand Cru Vieille Vigne du Levant
2002 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne
2015 Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc
2007 E. Guigal Ermitage Blanc Ex-Voto
2001 René Noël Legrand Saumur-Champigny La Chaintrée
1978 Burgess Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
1994 Burgess Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage Selection
1987 Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
1997 Jaboulet La Chapelle
1997 Isole e Olena Cepparello
1997 Gaja Sperss
1998 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba
2001 Livio Sassetti Pertimali BdM Riserva
1995 Valdicava BdM Madonna del Piano
2003 La Tour Blanche

Accompanied by a variety of cheese, smoked fish, duck rillettes with foie gras, pappardelle al cinghiale with parma and black truffles, green salad, lemon tart and biscotti.

It was one of those rare nights when every bottle showed at or near its peak. The '02 Comtes was layered, nuanced and complex with a long finish. The two Burgess were clearly the same wine, with the '78 adding a hint of capsicum that wasn't present in the '94. The trio of '97s were all spectacular but I was especially thrilled by the Sperss which had a massive intoxicating nose and a palate that wasn't far behind. Just an embarrassment of riches - the wine, food and camaraderie.

2012 Rhys Horseshoe Chardonnay (500ml). Complex melange of citrus, apple, pear and mineral elements.
The oak and acidity are very well integrated. Really a complete wine and among my favorite showings for Rhys Chardonnay yet.

2002 Allemand Reynard.

Took two hours or so after the decant to fully open up, but then a gorgeous bottle of Cornas. Black lives with iron on the palate and a long finish. Not the best vintage of Reynard, but with some air an outstanding bottle.
Thanks for this; I have an ‘04 on deck and will make sure to decant in advance
Stand it up for at least a week (longer better) and decant for sediment. Should be excellent!!

A magnum of 1997 Giacosa Barbaresco Santa Stefano that was horribly corked and a lovely 2015 Dirty and Rowdy Familiar Blanc that wasn’t.

At the same tasting, we also had a corked magnum of 1986 Latour. We don’t have magnums of Latour very often. In fact, the last time I can recall one with this group was our December 31, 1999 dinner where we had three: 1970, 1966, and 1945, and the 1966 and 1945 were both corked.

2007 Chateau de Beaucastel

I think the Mourvèdre saves the heat! Drank rather well but definitely a very rich wine. Paired with seared meats, so all in check.

2014 Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc

Paired beautifully with a mixed tray of pungent Northwestern oysters, hard cheese and some cold meats. Fairly high acidity, crisp yellow and wine fruits, saline.

2009 Cabot Confluence

PnP. What an interesting wine. Dark fruit, pepper, and smoke with firm gritty tannins (in a good way) becoming most apparent in the mid palate. The fruit and tannins seem to lighten up through a long finish.

For dinner, night before last - the champagne for various starters (terrine of goose foie gras, escargots à la bourguignonne, etc.), the rosé for main of Algerian Couscous:

I have yet to find a better pairing for Algerian Couscous.

Quite nice. Light-footed yet with notable palate presence, definition and lift. As mentioned, one has to pour some out and let the rest breathe (in proper temp) for around an hour, more or less, for it to show properly. Worth the wait though. I’d buy it again.

Best,

2017 Bedrock Zinfandel Esola Vineyard

Lighter and less dense on the palate compared to many other zinfandels. Delicate perfumed cherries and strawberries up front on the nose that over an hour in the glass gives way to black cherry, boysenberry, blood orange, and eucalyptus. There’s quite a bit of spice on the palate, almost Gigondas-like, but without the astringency I find with those when consumed young. Storing my two other bottles of this to be opened after 5 years.

2010 Casa Emma Chianti Classico Riserva. This wine continues to impress. Dark berries, bitter cherries, tar, subtle scorched earth. Paired perfectly with a ragu of lamb. I wish more retailers in NYS would stock this wine.

2005 PYCM Charmes: classic meursault; delicious salty lemon
2000 Pichon Lalande: drinking well with a 45m decant; elegant red fruit, pencil / cedar, and a faintly leafy character
1996 Pichon Lalande: just slightly less gourmand than the 2000 but no less drinkable
2015 Sassicaia: higher acid, lower tannin, discernibly its own thing, a decent drink but not hugely special

Couple half bottles:

Bollinger Special Cuvée

Great acidity and focus, on the leaner side but drank above its price point.

2015 La Dame de Montrose

Serious wine. Dark opaque purple in the glass. Cedar, cassis and chocolate on the nose. Surprisingly accessible. Some savory notes on the palate. Very long finish.

2015 Sandhi St. Rita hills chard

Oaky, buttery cali chard. Raj Parr's project, expected something mineral and taut, but got something he campaigned against! Disappointing...
