2017 Duhig Napa Valley Cab, a gift from my former classmate and co-worker, Peter Duhig, on the the birth of my first grandchild..Peter and I go back > 50 years..No clue re whether he is related to the Duhigs who made this delightful wine..Tart cherries and cassis, tannins mild and in the background..As this appears to be their second vintage, no track record, small production, 125 cases...Drinking quite well now but see nothing to indicate that this wine will not hold up for another 5 yrs or so..but why wait?

Over the weekend, I opened a 1986 Heitz Martha’s Vineyard. A youthful 34 years. Signature eucalyptus nose along with cassis. Mouth coating with flavors of black cherry and eucalyptus. A little drying on the very end, but what a lovely wine. The little remaining in the bottle held up well overnight.

The parents are in town so I made a nice steak dinner. We started the night with some cheese, and a 2016 Bass Phillips Estate Pinot Noir. I wished I planned this bottle ahead of time, I would’ve decanted for at least an hour. This opened so beautifully after an hour.

We opened a ‘97 Monte Bello with the steak dinner. The cork would not budge so 1/3 disintegrated and the other 2/3 was pushed into the bottle. This wine still had a beautiful purple color with flavors of plum, and just the slightest touch of licorice that fades away in the glass.

A very nice 2016 Patricia Green Pinot Weber Vineyard. Big nose and lots of powerful dark fruits with tannin. I won’t open next bottle for five years.

Opened a 2017 Baudry les Granges the other night and working on it a glass or two at a time. Almost like an earthy Bojo to me, with fruit also prominent. Enjoyable at room temp and also with a slight chill (where the fruit is emphasized). Bistro wine extraordinaire!

2019 Schafer-Frohlich blanc de noir trocken. Not really a rose, this is apparently pinot noir run directly off the skins. The color is not pink, at all, though it does retain some of the light strawberry flavor of a rose. A bit savory with a very clean finish, paired nicely with simply cooked fish and also pleasant on its own.

Quite a rich, smoky nose so I decanted it for four hours, after which it showed the cigar box and cassis notes I was expecting. A tight, rich and concentrated attack of cassis and blueberry, with notes of cranberry. And that was it. Quite thick, not much of a finish. Definitely like a Pauillac, but if I had tasted it blind I would have guessed a wine from somewhere else, trying to taste like a Pauillac.

Each to their own - I know many people like this - to me it tasted overblown and trying too hard, over-concentrated, like an Alliet Côteau de Noiré without the latter's crisp, fresh finish, which gives it the class and breeding that the PC lacked. Where's the nobility?

For me, there are lots of cheaper Pauillacs 04 tasting a lot better for a lot less.
Interesting. I had a bottle of this in my hands last night and decided to give it a little longer

Went with another 83 La Louviere, which is just a beautiful wine. I've pimped it here before, but a seriously delicious bottle of "old school" Pessac. Lovely.

Had a glass before dinner then came back to it a few hours later. Very much preferred the later pour. Have some other Dehu bottlings coming that I’m very excited to try.

2016 Querciabella Mongrana, their budget-ish Super Tuscan. OK, but a bit more modern in bent than I prefer with clear oak signature of cocoa/vanilla and less of that classic herbal/dusty earth of Sangiovese. Feels like the Merlot's playing an outsized role with the dense black cherry/plummy character of the fruit. Meh.

I still have a couple bottles of this. I took a bottle up for Rieslingfier in Jan 2018 but ended up letting my friend Mark open it for Egon Muller for lunch the Sunday after😢

I am told they enjoyed it.

I opened the 1999 Schaefer GD auslese (no. 6) last night for three guests on my front porch last night. Wowza! Totally delicious. Rich but light and beautifully balanced. Just a bit sweet. Terrific.

‘99 Bruno Clair Savigny Dominode — This comes from ancient vines and is a pet favorite wine of mine. It’s still so young but quite tasty. Takes a couple hours in the decanter to show much of anything. But as it unfurls the nose is really very lovely and the palate is bright and mineral but on the lean side. It slowly deepens with air. Four hours in, the last sip was the best.

2017 Sigaut Chambolle Fuees - this was a bit disappointing. Pretty ripe but also very tannic and the fruit didn't really come through. Finish was thick and really didn't speak of burgundy or pinot. Not what I expect from a 2017 Is there a chance there was a little tca? Possibly, though other notes on CT on this aren't so positive either.

That La Louvière sounds wonderful, lucky you! I think the PC 04 needs a good five years, but that's me. Perhaps I've been drinking too much Chinon - I blame Robert A Jr.

Opened a Moussé Fils Anecdote Blanc de Blancs Brut Lieu Dit Les "Varosses", a lovely wine with a very yeasty nose and nice acidity and citrusy fruit. Although the finish was a touch bitter.

And a 2016 Patricia Green Weber Vineyard. A smoky garnet color with a very floral nose. Intense red fruit with lots of tannin right now. I'll wait five years for the next bottle to open but a very nice wine

  • 2017 Gilbert Picq & ses Fils Chablis Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Chablis (25/10/2020)
Another great 2017 Chablis. Impressive weight, had a rounder and riper mouthfeel than I expected with a creamy texture. Swore was it down to oak but I suppose lees ageing and full malo can see to that. Very good acid and finish, but still very taut. Will seek out more of this and his Vosgros.

Excellent weight for the level, not too extracted and heavy on the toast (style change? Basic bottling?). Shows a lovely purity of fruit and achieves a good balance between red and black fruits. Looking at the prices, Roty definitely seems to be a good value play.

2007 Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain (10/26/2020)
Opened about two hours before drinking with rib roast dinner. Delicious integrated mature Cab. Concentrated fruit, nice balance, long finish. I would say it is in prime drinking window. Drink or hold. (95 pts.)

On Saturday with Flannery burgers. This was delicious and drinking quite well. Please forgive the awful green countertop...can't wait to replace it.

2010 Pio Cesare Barolo - only gave this a 30 minute decant. Could’ve used a full 2 hours because the last few sips about 3 hours later were amazing. This could sit in the cellar for many more years.

To my surprise, I truly enjoyed the 2000 Pavie Macquin we opened last night. I kind of expected this to be dominated by toasty oak, and wondered if it was too early for the 2000, but this is not oak-marked in the way that many early 2000s vintages of this producer have been. It is very early in its maturity curve but I am not sure holding would really improve the experience. Lovely expressive fruit, hypnotic aromas. Not life-altering but undeniably very nice.

We had that last week. Decanted it for a couple of hours. Was amazing.

2005 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Perrières Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru (10/31/2020)
WOW!! My second of three. PnP and drunk with slow cooker pheasant. One of the best burgundies I have had. Earthy cherry, integrated tannin, wonderful balance. Very elegant. A step up from the first bottle drank in 2018. Drink or hold. Happy to have another in the cellar. (95 pts.)
