Last night, a made-for-Alfert Neal cabernet, which was really nice for a change, and tonight one of the 2008 Moet et Chandon Brut Rosès in the hideous bottle

Chartogne-Taillet Sainte Anne. Just lovely. Will have to hide the rest of the bottle from myself.

2018 Giant Steps Chardonnay. Love these Aussie wines!

This is quite good. Made in a modern-Burgundian type style, there is definitely that smoky reductive quality on the nose. Not a ton of fruit on the palate, but a nice wash of crisp citrus and just a hint of roundness and a touch of the tropical discloses its origin. Good acidity, apparently only partial malo. Somewhat curtailed finish. For $22 US, it's a winner.

2016 Beaumont Haut Medoc, still looks young, medium-full body, well balanced enough to be a pleasure to drink, but little complexity yet. Will hopefully evolve but went well with cheese and charcuterie now.

Update on the Beaumont 2016 from last night, not a great deal of change, still round and easy to drink, no extra development, but held together well and shouldn’t fall apart anytime soon.

2018 Petit Clocher Anjou Blanc. Just a "basic" Anjou Blanc but a delicious one. Ripe fruit, not bright, but towards the baked end with a nice oak nuance that works. Acid completes the picture. Almost a bit like a dry version of Coteaux du Layon. Not a lightweight. We finished the bottle which we do not often do these days. I have been a fan of this property for 15 years and consider myself lucky when I can find some of its various bottlings. I noticed K&L has recently started to carry some of their wines. Anyone who shops there, give it a try and post what you think. I think this might be excellent but I might have rose colored glasses so it would be nice to hear a second opinion. Cheers.

Yannick Amirault Bourgueil Rosé d'Équinoxe 2018.

I'm not a rosé kind of guy (I won't dwell on it) but I've enjoyed this one thoroughly this summer. Color is between an aged white and a vin gris. This is 100% Cab Franc. Super dry. Kick ass texture on this. I think this could age nicely but that wasn't my objective. Last bottle. I'll have to find some more but it's not easy to source from where I sit.

2017 Campesino Isa Rose. The bottle arrived without a label so we stuck it in one of the wine refrigerators and forgot about it. Crisp, bright with tasty fruit like it was a brand new vintage. Another great wine from Macario Montoya.

Well everybody was impressed so we opened a bottle of 2015 Janasse Rose. It's alive. Light fruit, good acidity, some citrus and a lengthy finish. Starts tasting like an SB with red fruit gone by half a glass. Still drinkable with SB characteristics, no red fruit left but good acidity.

1988 Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo Ghemme Collis Breclemae (Nebbiolo)

This has aged very nicely. Garnet with no visual sign of its age, other than a light sediment. Light-bodied, dried roses, sweet red cherries, velvety. Graceful, delicate and persistent.

2017 Drouhin Montagny

This is my third and final bottle and a candidate for QPR of the year. So beautifully balanced, fresh, stony, awash in lovely citrus with just a kiss of oak for texture and creaminess. Wish I had 5 more.

  • 1999 Coppo Barbera d'Asti Pomorosso - Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Barbera d'Asti (13/8/2020)
Cork disintegrated and colour was worryingly bricked. Thankfully the wine was still full of life - very pretty nose of rose petals, high acidity and tannin made me think Nebbiolo at first. Made in a modern style, aged 24 months in small barriques, this had soft and supple tannins. A decent amount of fruit left, mainly cherries and blueberries. Tired towards the end but a very good showing for a 20 year old Barbera.
  • NV Adrien Renoir Champagne Grand Cru Le Terroir Extra Brut - France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru (13/8/2020)
50-50 PN-Chard, 2016 base and 3g/l dosage. Probably had this too young. Didn’t like this at first as it was very muted, became very expressive only after two hours of air. The best of both grapes here, very good cut and richness. Great value for an entry-level champagne.

1999 Domenico Clerico Barolo Percristina

Held on and finally un-corked with dinner of Dipalo’s red-sauced chicken milanese and angel hair pasta a wife’s wine gift purchased at release during one of her more frequent travel days eons ago. As her usual, she asked salesperson for a bottle or 2 to take home to winegeek husband.

2017 Franck Balthazar Cornas Cuvée Casimir Balthazar
Very young. Nose of black cherry. The palate is concentrated with notes of red and blue fruits, violets and a hint of pepper. Expansive and enjoyable. Showing more on day 2. Will certainly improve with time.

Per my comment a couple pages back, I did wind up getting a bottle of 2016 Cantemerle.

This is a good one. Very classic. A large percentage of Merlot adding a rounder and more dark red fruited character to Cab Sauvignon, which dominates the blend. (After tasting I looked it up: 52 to 39 percent, the rest CF and PV.) Very nice medium weight here. Just right. The aromas tend to cedar, black raspberry, and occasional muted licorice and petrichor. The acidity is nicely refreshing but integrated. Tannins are not exactly strict but present. Great balance. Almost gulpable with that bit of zing in the mid-palate. I had it with a bison steak from the grill, which was good but it might have been better with a beef steak (I don’t eat those anymore) or even duck unfruited. (Strangely fabulous with the bison was my leftovers of 2018 Huet Le Mont Demisec.)

[Added:] Just as good on Day 2.

The price was OK. With 10% coupon $49.49. I recently bought a bottle of the remarkable ‘83 on WineBid for $55 hammer, which has basically been the going rate for a few years now. I’m not sure still what to think of a market that clears at the same price for mature excellent wines as new release. But $45-50 seems pretty fair for the quality of the ‘16. It’s a bargain in the UK under $30 US.

1994 Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill - the nose leads you to believe it’s Bordeaux. Dark fruit, florals, tobacco, and bell pepper on the palate with bright acids. Tannins are resolved and fruit is beginning to fade and a joy to drink.

1993 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rose
Well preserved with a pristine cork and fine mousse; enjoyable nose - toasty, honeyed, savory, along with a layer of tertiary preserved plum, which I don't get very often because we don't drink that much rose; though this does not have any particular strengths, it makes up for that by its easy competency in every dimension; dangerously gluggable; good

2006 Dominus
Showstoppingly good aromas that are classic Dominus - plum, spice, bit of mineral; sweet, silky and easygoing on the palate but with enough discipline to keep from being louche; this tilts towards redder (vs. blacker) fruit and a lighter body - for a Dominus - the elegance is undeniable; good plus

2016 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Fay Vineyard Cab
Really nice wine, that definitely needs at least another year or two. Nose is classic Napa cab - dark fruit (especially plum) with cigar and a bit of red fruit. Taste is primarily dark fruit and oak with a bit of spice and graphite. Silky tannins, higher alcohol that needs a bit of time to settle.

2013 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest
A very enjoyable white Burgundy even if it tastes richer than what you'd expect from Chablis. The nose has notes of iodine, flowers and yellow fruit. The palate is a little richer with notes of riper orchard and citrus fruit, minerals and a hint of salinity.

My last Franny Beck from the Berserker special. Sad to see it go.

Bought 36 of the Patricia Green muscat. Pounding through them especially this week while in Sonoma on vacation enduring the 100 degree heat. My favorite warm weather wine. Pity I only have 6 left.

2018 Cep Pinot Noir - lovely on day 4 - bright red fruits cherry, strawberry with some darker blackberry, blueberry and plum underneath; was lovely on day one as well. 13% abv. Light on its feet; lifted. Great qpr.
2018 Olga Raffault Chinon Rose - light fruited, nimble good qpr seems right in line with higher priced rose.
2014 - Mark Harold Mouverdre Flux - deep fruited, brooding, heavy leaves without the barnyard.
