Last night:

2015 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard. Really enjoyed this pinot even though it wasn't rated by Parker. That's usually a bad sign but no regrets on this wine.

2016 Chateau Fonroque. Medium bodied and pleasant. Given its youth and unsurprisingly it got better and better the longer it was opened.

‘66 Beychevelle, 5th bottle from an OWC, all have been drinking well, fairly consistent.

2017 La Follette Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. Small production boutique wine we came across that is beautiful sleeper.

2016 Chateau Ste. Anne Bandol Rouge Cuvée Collection

A fine, young natural wine from the South of France.

2017 La Chablisienne Les Vénérables VV.

I had the 2016 version of this wine a couple of weeks ago, and it's fun to try this and compare the two. This vintage is quite a bit better to my palate, with much more of that desirous fresh mineral signature on the nose. More focused and well-knit/harmonious as a whole. White flowers and light citrus notes on the palate, with a crisp finish. Solid value Chablis from a vintage that plays to the region's strengths.

2009 Lillian Syrah. I don't buy a lot of new world wines these days, but I have been really impressed with this wine from Maggie Harrison. Second bottle I've opened in 3 months :)

Had to open something pink to celebrate the birth of our granddaughter this weekend, our first grandchild.
And? Have a few of these waiting for shipping weather.

Opened a 1983 D'Angludet. Gorgeous Margaux nose; a little coarse and fruit-shy on the palate. Good but not great

EDIT: Circling back to this D'Angludet. I underestimated how it would open up and thought the coarseness was due to age. Not so. After a couple of hours this really came into its own. Lovely, lovely wine.

Very nice but early in the window. If I had more, I’d let them sleep a few more years.

Sorry I can’t offer a more of a TN than that. Was in more of a celebratory mood than analytical.

2015 Dureuil-Janthial Rully Maizières
Very good structure for a village and has a pleasant round texture. But the hot vintage predominates with exotic fruits and slight lack of acidity.

NV Fleury Pere & Fils Champagne Fleur de l'Europe Brut
Disgorged May 2019. 85% Pinot, 15% Chard. Pinot-heavy champagnes aren’t my preferred style but this does it well especially for an entry-level wine. The power of Pinot shines through, heavy on the toasted brioche and in a slightly oxidative style.

2008 Château Lanessan
Love this château for flying the cru bourgeois flag. Heavy menthol with some herbal and green notes that were pleasant rather than overbearing. Not as exciting as the 09 but very good for its price.

2008 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Granges
Much greener than the Clos Guillot that I had last week, and less fruit forward. This is less approachable and still rather closed at the moment.

A still closed Les Granges from a very difficult, frosty/rainy vintage. Not exactly something I would expect from Baudry's usually young-drinking entry-level.

Have anyone opened any 2011 white burgs recently? Aside from the 3 whites in photo (tasted 2 nights ago), I had the 2011 Bouchard Clos St. Landry last night. They all tasted 3-4 years younger. Highly recommended to enjoy right now.

2011 Schafer-Frohlich Felseneck GG - Excellent showing. I've always liked this wine -- I think S-F did '11 just right -- and it's in a great place now. While still young, it's wide open with layers of bright fruit and seriously intense minerality. I think it will improve and reach greater heights. And as a bit of nostalgia, this still had the Premier Cru import sticker!

Funny to think that two bottles of 85 Sass went for around $8600 in the HDH auction. Was it that good?

It was definitely good... not $4K a bottle good though honestly. I’m not sure I’ve had a bottle that I consider $4k a bottle good. For me, the MB, Lafite and Sass were all pretty similar quality.

Just arrived in Paris, bought a 2015 Belle-Vue Haut Médoc, a good mid range Bordeaux from a ripe and friendly vintage. Excellent with a chunk of terrine de campagne and some crusty bread. Will age fairly well, but perfectly drinkable now.

Once upon a time, I had a mini vertical of Sassicaia in the cellar, drank the last bottle, the 1990, around 10 yrs ago, glorious wines but next wine I drink that I feel is worth $1K/bottle, will be the first one..
last night, with Bison steaks, baked potato and creamed spinach, 2010 Carlisle Sonoma County Syrah..

1998 Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc
Forthright perfume of lemon and mineral; flourish of white flowers and a hint of white mushroom to add interest; broad shouldered and grippy in the mouth; not fully able to shake its lowly Bourgogne status as it finished rather abruptly, leaving naught but a coppery wisp; palate and finish did get denser with several hours of air, though at the expense of the aromatics; all in all an enjoyable example of the Coche style, and I'm glad to have caught the wine on the tail-end of its plateau; good plus

2018 Donnhoff Hermannshohle GG

Poured upon opening. Perfect balance of fruit (primarily lemon/lime and grapefruit) with vibrant acidity and minerality. I’ll save the rest of this bottle for early next week as I’m sure it’ll gain some complexity with more air.

2011 EMH Black Cat Cabernet - picked up on the quarantine offer. This is just an awesome cab. Not a big opulent one, just elegant with soft supple tannins. more fruit on the nose than on the palate, but just perfect. I love this cab, one of my favorites.

2016 Lilian Ladouys. Although I rarely open young Bordeaux, my geographic constraint led me to this Total Wine direct import. It’s a decent luncheon claret (that I drank with dinner) sporting Merlot-dominated aromas of kirsch / cherry (dare I say Black Forest Cake?), caraway, and crushed coriander seed, with just enough acidity to fight alcohol that teeters higher than the listed 13.5%. Not bad at this price point. It was starting to shut down the second day.

I have a soft spot for the Chateau as the ‘94 was first red wine I ever paid attention to. Jean-Luc Le Dû recommended and served it to me and friends at the old Daniel when he still worked the floor there.

I expect that next up Bordeaux-wise will be 2016 Cantemerle.

2013 Peter Michael Chardonnay Ma Belle-Fille - Nose very explosive with strong notes of orange peel and honey. Palate shows vanillin, pastry, and citrus fruits. Oak very prominent but pleasant. Very very very long finish. Can easily last for another 10 years

2007 R Lopez de Heredia Reserva Blanco Vina Tondonia: light amber color with a very ripe, oaky nose, but really nice on the palate with stone fruits, earthy notes, and again really ripe/oxidized flavors. This was unforgiving on the first day, but after a night in the fridge it really opened up on day 2 and was singing, and those oxidized notes fell away. I anticipate this will hold for many many years!

How was your Haut Brion? I have some but I haven’t tried it yet.
