A tale of 2 (2004) Pomerols.

Continuing on with stay@home check-ups on bottles purchased at, and stored since, release

Bottles were stood up for 4 days and drank at separate contiguous dinners.

2004 Ch. Gazin, Pomerol

Blood, ink. Appealing Pomerol bouquet of some earth and meadow flowers.

Pleasant cool-weather ripe dark berries and sour cherries. Dry herbs and savory notes. I liked the hint of bell pepper at the finish. Day 2 = same as Day 1, sniffed a little more of wet leaves and developed some baking spice, and enjoyed the wine even more. Long, tasty ending.
B+/A-

2004 Ch. Le Bon Pasteur, Pomerol

Double-decanted an hour before dinner.

Smelled prominently of tobacco, graphite, and a hint of alcohol.

Nice level of sweetness, pleasant notes of veggie broth, bit of wood, but that labeled 13.5% abv crept in at the beginning, somewhat became a notable omnipresence throughout and unfavorably lingered on, especially at finish. A mixed-cocktail happy hour special?

It was a Burgundy weekend. A 2008 Hubert Lignier Fixin blanc, a 2013 Faiveley Fuees and a 2014 Felettig Chambolle VV (the last two shared with some friends by way of delivery). Some of these were more successful than others........

A Bouard disaster as far as Bordeaux goes:

2015 Chateau Siran, Margaux

I used to like this classic estate with his traditional, rustic profile. This is now all gloss, alcohol and tons of oak. It’s gross. Critics are raving about it, of course. This is not Bordeaux.

It’s going down the sink.

I did not realize Siran has gone over to the darkside. Is there a more difficult region in the world to buy wine from right now than Bordeaux. Bordeaux used to be so easy, but now it really is a minefield.

Bouard swooped in for this vintage. Lanessan, too.

With take-out dinner last night. Went surprisingly well with the fried salt & pepper squid. Not so with the sweet & sour pork.

2006 Quilceda Creek Palengat. Dark, extracted, but more approachable than the estate cab. Probably softened by the cab franc and petite verdot. Beautiful finish with notes of vanilla and oak. This winery is the reason I started collecting wine. They never disappoint.
Cheers,

Going to log into the Zoom with Vilmart later. Though I don't have any Vilmart on me I'll likely open up something here like NV Delamotte or Chartogne-Taillet Cuvee Sainte Anne.

Cooking some Flannery steaks tonight. Still debating whether to open a 2015 Faury St. Joseph VV or a Ridge Geyserville or Lytton Springs.

Early evening pica-pica to dinner at home tonight, respectively:

Definitely nice with pâté de foie gras & dried figs.

Acceptable at best. Inexpensive; and with every good reason to be.

Alfio Mozzi Valtellina Grisone. I like this wine because it sounds like it’s made by the Mafia. And it’s a very cool expression of Nebbiolo.

Chartogne Taillet Cuvée Ste. Anne. Super Champagne for $40-45, for those who like citrus/mineral as opposed to brioche style.
