2008 Biggio Hamina Pinot Noir Ana Vineyard

Dark and brooding on the nose. Dried blackberry, black currant, black cherries, and figs complement organic earth, wet leaves, leather, and tar. Almost nebbiolo-like in its non-fruit character. Maintains great concentration and roundness on the palate, with integrated dusty tannins. The finish is mostly savory notes of baking spice, organic earth, and forest floor. In a great spot right now.

Here's an obscure grape from an obscure region... a Fonte Cal varietal from Portugal's Beira Interior. This is a neglected grape variety which was revived by Quinta dos Termos - herbaceous, with a somewhat neutral mouth vaguely suggesting thyme and arugula, and a nose which subtly implies oakiness. Sadly not something that will ever figure on the importer's market, I believe.

I did the Berserker Day one (2015?) last night. Was great. Needed a grilled steak, which I had.
Thanks Pete and Paul for the mentions. Glad you enjoyed them! flirtysmile

2008 Arcadian Francesca Pinot Noir. I liked it yesterday, I love it tonight. Dark cherry cola notes and refreshing acidity.

2012 Lionnet Cornas Terre Brulee
Rather good with enough time to air out. Approachable without being too glossy, with all the hallmarks of N Rhone syrah, including that iron note that I specifically associate with Cornas. Delicious paired with, of all things, sour Sichuan beef stew. Pretty good value all things considered. Surprising to me Lionnet don't get more play on WB...

2016 Faiveley Mercurey Blanc.

This is the kind of Sunday-Thursday white you couldn’t ask much more from: sea spray, fresh lemon, a touch of apricot, and a kiss of oak. Unfussy but well-made.

A number of things we picked up through travels and forgot about:

2016 PS Garcia Piedra Lisa Mourvèdre (bought in Santiago, Chile in May 2019) - pretty damn good after 3 hours of air

2012 Black Elephant Amistad Syrah (bought in Frranschoek in August 2015) - awesome surprise, alive and vibrant, not very Syrah tasting, but damn delicious

2018 Agathe Bursin Sylvaner Eminence

Quince, honeydew melon, grapefruit, orange blossom, and passion fruit. Slightly sweet on the palate, with a full body and excellent concentration. More herbal notes, including mint and thyme, as the wine opens up. Delicious juice.

2014 Domaine Pattes Loup Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux

This achieved a wonderful balance of ripeness and acidity. Broad and rich on the palate, almost texturally round. Textbook lemon peel but not so typical chablis with sweet tropical fruits.

2017 Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons

More typicity but very tight and reticent at the start. Somewhat steely and reductive but opened up to show good acidity and minerality. Greener end of the spectrum of fruits compared to the Pattes Loup.

2009 Jean Foillard “Cote du Py” Morgon

Bursting at every sip with sweet, ripe cherries and blackberries. Fine layer of broth. Mineral. A tart strawberry-laced finish that can probably be stop-watched at 47 seconds.
A delicious 11 y-o Morgon.

Asked my wife to open any bottle $50 or under. Pop it into a decanter and serve so I wouldn't know what it was. Took one sniff to identify wine (American Cab) and producer. 2013 Ridge Estate Cab.

I was proud of myself until I remembered I only have 3 producers of American Cab in that price range. BTW, really nice juice. For me, the Estate Cab is a step up in quality from their Zins and field blends.

2018 Dirty & Rowdy Evanghelo Mourvedre. Opened last night, still working on it tonight and will probably finish it tomorrow. A nice drop. Bramble berry, adding a little more lift tonight. It is young and has some tannin and acid structure in the midpalate to smooth out but the tannins are fine. Hardy, if you see this, does this see a bit of new oak or aged toasted barrel? I get a touch of a vanillin in the finish that should integrate in a couple years.

These D&R Mourvedres are the only wines from Cali I’ve ever bought on a consistent basis. Very happy to have them in the cellar.

2009 Roulot Tessons
Slight letdown here; though this does show the Roulot character it is covered up by the vintage and the result is merely reasonable. Opens with lemon, light + soaring florals, a cool reductive herby note, and a hint of butterscotchy maturity. This shows finesse and remains light-footed despite the vintage, though the trademark Roulot laser-like acidity and precision is sadly not in evidence. With 18h+ in the fridge the fruit and florals dissipate, leaving a mineral-driven wine with a good amount of power to it, in the style of Coche, though this doesn't quite bring off the homage due to a lack of density on the finish. Good

Hi, Ashish. You are most welcome to; but you’d have to come and visit.

The de Fargues was fine. I chose that bottle as it looked quite dark for an ‘86 Sauternes. The cork was fine - though the bottom 1/4th broke off, I was able to extract it cleanly, and it showed no sign of being soaked or wet.

Haha never thought there was a contest - silly me😉.

It showed very well, all things considered. After some time, a decidedly ferrous/sanguine theme emerged. More details later, as I intend a full blown post on this dinner in the wine section.

1993 Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico
Alive and kicking! Opened, decanted for sediment then just about right into a glass. right from the start it was super complex and layered, but the fruit brightened up a bit with a little bit of air time. dark cherry, dusty Italian earth notes, orange liqueur, nice acidity, tannin is there but its integrated and smooth. better than I hoped for a 27 year old chianti Classico with unknown provenance! 90-92pts

2001 Domaine Louis Remy Chambolle-Musigny "Derriere la Grange" 1er Cru
TBH, I bought this wine because I love Chambolle-Musigny and thought the fact it had "Derriere" in the name was hilarious, Because I had no knowledge of the producer or vineyard besides the names. My research afterwards gave me hope it wasn't a terrible call. for those who are just laughing at the name like I was, Derriere is just below and right up against Les Fuees. Not bad real estate! The wine has moved past primary stage and is gaining some weight and secondary depth. the fruit is still ripe and red, but there is earthiness while maintaining that delicacy that Chambolle is known for. it was overpowered a bit by pairing with cassoulet, but would be a great roasted chicken wine. im gonna call this a 91, but the happiness of this being more than just drinkable might bump that up in my head.

I had this on Thursday, and my experience was the opposite of yours. I liked it much more the first night when fruit, tannins and acid were in balance. It turned overly acidic the second night. In spite of that, it's a nice wine.

2017 Tempier Rose in this beautiful weather

1992 ESJ El Niño tee’d up for dinner
Please post notes for El Niño.

I’ve been standing a 1994 Les Cotes Sauvages for the past 2 weeks. Looking for the right dinner to pair it with.
That bottle of 94 was one of my WsOTY last year...so far the El Niño is a little more flat, but going to follow it through the evening. Nose is beautiful with cranberry, a little cedar and a slight sweet note I can’t quite describe. On the tongue, it’s very light, matches it’s listed alcohol perfectly (13.5), and still has some sour cherry fruit. The tertiary flavors are starting to come in Nicely, but the acid is still at 100% and making it fee a bit disjointed...too young at almost 28? Maybe...still very enjoyable, and no regrets with grilled Italian sausage off the grill.

Edit: about 4 hours in the acid dropped down and this was singing. Just a super fun wine. Bought from the Steve Edmunds Cellar Sale last year.

2000 San Vincente Rioja - A lot of deep, concentrated fruit with plenty of acidity to balance. Will definitely go another 10 years

Yesterday was the 2007 Levet Cotie Rotie La Chavaroche. Really in a good spot, the feral qualities firing on all cylinders. Tonight the 2016 Gonon Iles Feray. A top flight vintage in Northern Rhône, my favorite since 2010. This wine drinks well above its pay grade. Love the briny black olive and seared meat notes. So much better than its 2015 sibling.

‘07 Mugneret Gibourg Les Chaignots - fantastic showing after being in semi-shutdown stage for a year, elegant interpretation of NSG, continued to improve over 3-4 hours, the last glass was the best.

2016 Red Stitch Soberanes Vineyard, SLH, Pinot Noir. After watching Rich Aurelia and Dan Kosta prepare meals for each others wines we had to join in. Since we had Rich's Red Stitch tonight, that gives us an excuse to have AldenAlli P/N tomorrow.

2014 Navarro Vineyards Pinot Noir Methode A L'Ancienne

Haven't had one of these for a couple of years. A bit shutdown I think right now. Took quite a bit of time to show some nose and still not much. Will cork the bottle and try more tomorrow.

Zind Humbrecht Jebsel Pinot Gris 2000.Deep Amber color like a Sauternes.Tremendouly enjoyable and slighty on the downside. This one always puts a smile on my face.
