Had a really good bottle of O' Shaughessey Cab last night.

2005 O'Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain - USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain (9/2/2019)
Drank my next to last bottle last evening with Osso bucco. Opened about one hour before drinking. Delicious mature cab. Very elegant with no rough edges. Just delicious. Drink or hold. (94 pts.)

Opened a 2017 Precision Wine Napa Cab today for dinner. Absolutely awful. Super-extracted, oaky, jammy, artificial-tasting, over the top mess. [pwn.gif]

Pine Ridge 2007 Howell Mountain, starting to get some of the age to show. Decanted and let sit in the glass slow sipping for an hour. Drinking very nice.

Always nice to chance upon a fun-drinking, lively Loire white with a bit of age on it. Still fun in day 2.

Opened a 2016 Grand Puy Lacoste half bottle "for science." This is going to be glorious in 15 years. Right now, as you might expect, it is ocean-deep in fruit and tannin as well. Not especially delightful to drink this young, but you know, the sacrifices we make for science.

I've drank very well this year, and this bottle tonight was one of the best I've had. $90 from Envoyer a few years ago -- a pristine bottle and a silly bargain. I just looked back at the Envoyer email and apparently this is ex-cellar; not surprising given the condition. Glad I have another. I should have bought as much as they'd give me.

1989 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile Vendanges Tardives
Good god this is stunning. Golden in the glass, this is the complete package. Penetrating nose of smoky crushed stone fruits and faint petrol. The palate is deep and complex -- with intense, mouth-coating Riesling fruit dusted with spices and minerals -- yet pure and still surprisingly energetic. The balance is spherical. Despite the VT designation, this really isn't all that sweet and went fabulously as a dinner wine with (non-spicy) Asian food. One of the best wines I've had this year and reference-quality Riesling from any region. At peak but in no danger of fading in the near-term. 95

2016 Balthazar - Cotes du Rhone. After about 10 minutes in the glass, this was a delicious mouthful of black cherry and other dark fruits. Sappy, grapy syrah, but fresh, with lots of softish tannins and good acid, and some earthier things emerging later. This is just yummy now, and I'm sure it will provide a lot of pleasure over the next five, maybe even ten, years.

Btw, before drinking, stood up my bottle for just under 3 weeks to clear out sediment.

1997 Ch Montelena, last bottle of a case, retirement gift from my staff a number of years ago. the last few bottles were better..cork broke and what was left of the cork crumbled..Wasn't terribly optimistic as I poured the wine through a strainer into my glass..However, the nose was fine, albeit a bit muted..wine kinda ditto in that while it drank quite nicely, it wasn't as deep and flavorful as as previous bottles..Don't see much point in holding em if you have any, wd drink em up.

2014 School House Vineyard Mescolanza Syrah (mixed blacks blend). Notes on CT indicate a later drinking window, but with short decant this is lovely now.

night #2 re the 1997 Monty..nose has perked up a bit, more floral..ditto on the palate, now tastes like a graceful aging cab, still attractive but no longer at peak..Doubt it will improve but doesn't taste or smell corked..

1976 Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva
The cork was a disaster but the wine was pristine.
Clear and sparkling, red on the inside and onion skin on the outside.
Sweet velvety palate impression with little tannin, subtle raisiny fruit remaining but very savory as well.
One of the best older wines that I can remember tasting
(consumed with greek style roasted chicken).

Wow, would love to hear your thoughts on the various vintages of LMHB - looks like a great night.

We just had a random hodgepodge
98 Grande dame (provenance unknown and it showed a little) - lots of mushrooms and orchard fruit on the nose, not much fruit presence on the palate. Crisp and linear but lacking in density and no apparent dosage.
99 La Jota / 99 Whitehall Lane cabs - I always get this metallic edge and cherry cough syrup from older La Jota. Whitehall showed nicely and was the better wine
2003 E&E Shiraz- absolutely no gloop, this gem made by Ben Glaetzer was firing on all cylinders and at a beautiful peak. In a lovely spot as far as integration goes, with some pretty black pepper notes
2012 Conn Creek Diamond Mtn - a big and delicious cab that leans modern (read big extraction) with that lovely orange peel note I sometimes get with TRB wines
2016 Usseglio Mon Aeuil - wow. The notion that S.Rhone doesn’t have it together is just bonkers. Now, if you don’t like ripe, high alcohol Grenache, this wine won’t appeal, but it has a marvelous, face enveloping bouquet of candied wild, exotic, brambly fruits. Great texture and length, I get the high scores.

I opened the last of my 1983 Rausan Segla last night and it was just glorious -- best bottle of the bunch. Performed much above my expectation, despite the fact that I have had it 3 times in the last 18 months or so. Rich and generous but nearly weightless. Just a beautiful wine and a contemplative drinking experience.

I was shocked at the replacement cost (bought mine for $70; now $300). I'll be hunting for more if I can find a bargain

Great wine. I feel like I occasionally see it well under $300 at auction but these things can change fast.

2012 Beta Cabernet Sauvignon - my second bottle of 3 and hasn’t changed much since last year, when I very much enjoyed that bottle. Dark cherry, espresso, black olive, earthy, moderately acidic, and good length. Balance and restraint. I perceived less alcohol than the 14.1% on the label. My kind of California Cab. Waiting for the next release.

2008 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Cuvée de Trois. I'd coravin'd a couple of glasses over the last couple of months and popped the cork tonight to finish it off. Not horrible, some pretty strawberry and cherry notes with a touch of spice. Medium bodied, moderate acidity, but a touch hot on the finish.

2016 La Bastide St. Vincent Vacqueyras Pavane. Enjoyable if maybe a bit simple. Decently balanced, not overly-ripe/jammy, but still very fruity. With this I've now enjoyed each of the 3 different Vacqueyras that I've tried, though it wasn't nearly as good as the Red 2016 Domaine le Sang des Cailloux Vacqueyras Cuvée Floureto opened a month or so ago, which had more complexity and structure.

1979 Domaine de Chevalier. Slightly bricked color. Talc on the nose. Red cherry on the palate, light notes of leather and forest floor. Medium weight, nice acidity. Long finish. Not complex, but still alive, for a 40 yr old wine, delightful!

2008 Larkmead Syrah, had it with roast leg of lamb. Medium body, medium acid and fine tannins starting to soften. Was initially closed but much better 1 hour in. Some leather/tobacco notes, black and red fruits, a bit of pepper and tea. Very enjoyable.
