With dinner tonight with the wife & children. The ‘02 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne BdB notably layered and complex - delicious; but feel it needs around 3-5 more years to fully come together. The ‘93 JJ Confuron NSG 1er Cru Aux Boudots nice and meaty, good heft (after breathing for around an hour), nice fruit-acid balance. It went well with the skirt steak; but got overwhelmed by the bone-in rib-eye.

Beaucastel, with its higher Mourvèdre cut, works for me!

2016 Joshua Cooper Pinot Noir. Discovered this at a local brokers tasting last fall. Nicely balanced Pinot Noir for my palate. Went very well with Easter dinner.

We had a 1998 B Giacosa Barbaresco last night and I can't claim that it was particularly distinguished. Cloudy and dull in appearance, fairly sweet and simple on the nose. The palate was "correct" and the entire package was enjoyable but a terrible value at the $150-200 for which it goes now. I think I paid ~$70 for it, and even that seems too rich.

2003 Pavie. It's . . . not my thing. It isn't OTT so much as it is just not very appealing to drink. Drying tannins make it pretty coarse going down. If it were $20 a bottle it would be inoffensive. It isn't $20.

2017 Aperture Sauvignon Blanc. I think one of the better Sauvignon Blancs from CA. Lemon zest on the nose. Mineral components on the palate. Nice structure. I really like this wine. Jesse Katz is the winemaker. I have not had a lot of his wines, but what I have had, Aperture Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc, Devil Proof Malbec and some cabs have been really good.

2012 Ramey Sonoma Coast-very nice, drinking great. One of the hardest to pull corks I’ve had in years, that thing was freaking in there.
2011 Roar SLH .375-oy, I got these for next to nothing ($7.00 I think) I know they are known for making big wines but I thought 2011 might have been more to my liking due to the vintage. Heavy and clumsy and not wearing that listed 14.9 very well.

2012 Realm Farella, paired with Game of Thrones. Because I drink, and I know things.

Deep dark purple. Blue fruit on the nose. Black cherry and cocoa with a little gravel. Rich and tannic, but balanced and well integrated. PNP, settles down after a couple of hours. Long finish.

2010 Drinkward Peschon ‘Entre Deux Mères’ Cabernet Sauvignon

Earthy, slightly savory notes meld with black fruit and espresso on the palate. The finish is mildly tangy, with suggestions of black cherry and underbrush. No hurry on these, as they have both the structure and the acidity to continue aging well. This bottle showed best after 2+ hours of air. 91 pts.

2010 Domaine Giraud Châteauneuf-du-Pape ‘Tradition’

I have really moved away from drinking CDP; in fact, this is the first bottle I’ve had in 2+ years, as so many have become outsized and overripe. However, this wine was excellent. It’s right at the point in its maturity where I tend to enjoy them - still showing juicy red fruit and some garrigue notes, but the tannins have smoothed out and there’s not a ton of tertiary development yet. This is a cleanly made wine - which, in my experience, is sadly not a given with CDPs. I wish I had a couple more. 92 pts.

Captain-Gagnerot Corton les Grand Lolieres 1999. Drinking really beautifully right now; lithesome fruit (lovely light cherries and plumb), threaded with consummate, life-giving acidity. Just a touch of VA when opened but it blew off. A lovely drink.

In a classical, austere, even youthful, Nebbiolo mode. Wine with dinner at Fiaschetteria Pistoia in the East Village.

1998 Travaglini Gattinara Tre Vigne

Plus, a post dinner claret with cheeses at home. Also austere, seemingly backward.

2010 EMH Vineyards ‘Black Cat’ Cabernet Sauvignon

Needed 90 minutes to open up, at which point there was a distinct red-fruit profile, led by juicy cherries and raspberries. The tone shifted to darker fruits with additional air, and a touch of the minerality I often find in these wines became more clear. Medium + bodied, with nice lift in the finish. Should drink well for at least several years to come. 91 pts.

1979 Pichon Laland. 40th bday wine, and by far the oldest bottle I’ve had. I was very excited and researched the board on how to handle such a bottle.

Bought an Ah so to use after standing the bottle up the day before. Promptly pushed the cork into the bottle, and clumsily gurgled the wine into a decanter. So much for avoiding sediment.

Poured a small glass...stale, musty, raisin. This is what one waits 40 years to experience?

Fortunately, the wine settled down and opened up into something quite lovely as I followed it over several hours:

Earthy, cigar box, plum and cassis. Smooth and subtle, but still structured. Balanced minerality and fruity core. Chewy finish.

This was exquisite- mature nose of library, some iron that I associate with this chateau, red plum, great acidity and fruit left in the tank, with nearly resolved tannins. Not a flaw to be found, and showed better and better over about 6 hours. Prime window.

12 Mt Eden Cab
Double yum. Spearmint, pencil shaving and cedar, with dark blackberry and black cherry fruit. Very fragrant and behaved well, but there’s some wood that still needs to be shed

17 Yves Metras Fleurie Le Printemps
I’m going to assume this was flawed, maybe a secondary fermentation in bottle? This was reductive on opening (which improved with air time) and mousey AF. A little spritz on the top of your tongue. 4 hours later it was drinkable with bright cherry fruit, but only if you like horse water

Nice! As another 79, this is a personal favorite.

16 Slate Ridge Sierra Foothills Sangiovese. Really impressive California Sangiovese, just a notch behind Vino Noceto.

Vineyard is in Shingle Springs. Another Shingle Sangio of note is Cielo, although there are vintage inconsistencies.

Yes, delicious stuff. While there are a lot of razor clams around Asia; the ones at this restaurant (Bar Pintxos’ - the Alabang branch, which is our neighbourhood hangout) are from Europe. This batch I suspect is from the Netherlands; but which particular type I’m not sure.

Best,
