Washington Cab with 34% Petite Verdot. Haven’t tried this in 5 yrs because it was such a bruiser the last time. Still quite a bit of tannin and sharp (?) PV taste. Needs more air and food I think.

A half bottle of 2007 LdH Tondonia Riserva. Definitely old school. Dirt and moss. Very nice.

Upon opening, meh...but it put on weight over the course of a couple of hours. Red-fruited bouquet and palate. We recently brought out of storage a mixed case of 2006 AF Abbey-Harris, Tina Marie and Peters. We'll try one of the others soon.

2013 Pierre-Yves Colin Morey Meursault Charmes
Savory, concentrated, palate-staining minerality meets faintly lactic citrus; large scaled, though not quite as large as the 2010 Chassagne En Remilly from July; drinking well though monolithic; time to bury the remaining bottles for another 5 years to see if more complexity emerges; good plus

Yup! Weirdly, the 97 Cras was ludicrously reduced. I still have a bit left (in the Roulot bottle). It’s getting better very slowly.

Gravner 2012 Ribollo.

Still not sure what to say about it. Can't quite understand it in one sitting. My wife and I will need to revisit it a few times. Upon opening, my wife commented that it was like a scotch almost. Trying to understand something like this wine is a wonderful challenge. it is 16% alcohol, aged 7+ years in barrel after fermentation in amphora. Lots to unwind. A bit pricey too.

This is phenomenal juice. Just fantastic what he managed with the vintage. This was rich, with compact boysenberry and blueberry, black tea leaves and a hint of rose petal. Really loving in my new Conterno Sensory glass(es).

2015 Cortes de Cima Aragonez - Portugal, Alentejano, Vinho Regional Alentejano (10/13/2021)
Good. It took a while for the nose to start to appear. I should have decanted this for a fair amount of time. Once the nose got going, it was showing very ripe, almost stewed red berries and prunes. The (French) oak is also rather present. Fortunately, the palate is very lively. The fruit is present and accompanied by a very nice streak of acidity and grippy tannins. The oak is also noticeable on the palate but the mid-palate and finish bring some mint and herbal notes with a slight bitterness. There is some heat on the finish though (label says 13.5%). This needs time to integrate but it has the structure to do so. I'd love to try this again with some age.

2014 K Vintners Royal City Syrah, Stoneridge vyd. My third vintage of this wine and each time I’ve been surprised how impressive it is. Great intensity of dark fruit flavors framed by Rocks-like savory notes, very full bodied, but in no way over done or over-blown. It’s from the Royal Slope rather than the Rocks but has quite similar aromatics but with less olive juice, brine, and ferrous than the Rock usually gives. As before, it’s a much different and better wine with 7-8 years than it is young. 4+ (out of 5) easy.

While the Country Lawyer is in the lap of luxury, drinking the greatest wines the world produces, I am clearing out the stables by drinking the dregs so he doesn't have to. Last night, to shield him from the refuse, we opened a 2000 Pavie Macquin. Shockingly, the wine is pretty, pretty good. Not Ovid good, mind you, but a really pleasant wine. Fruit-forward to be sure, and perhaps lacking the finesse he and Todd demand, but I could find no real objection to the drinking experience.

2017 Thorn-Clarke Shiraz William Randell was all right. It was softer than expected and kind of a had a crayon aroma. The finish was extremely peppery for me. Wasn't bad with southern style BBQ.

I don’t remember ever seeing a mainstream winery using a completely unbranded cork, this doesn't have name, vintage, nothing. Anyway, nice bottle.

I love when my nephew and his wife come over to visit. I can open more bottles to enjoy.
2012 Aubry Ivoire et Ebene - a nice champagne for the money. Went very well with a salmon mousselline.
2017 Daniel-Etienne Defaix Chablis VV - not showing all that well. A bit flat and simple
2007 Sullivan Coeur de Vigne - drinking very well right now. Lots of dark fruit and leather. A very smooth palate. I will have to search out some older bottles.

Pulled out a couple of unknowns from the cellar:

2017 Le Rocher des Violettes Montlouis-sur-Loire Touche-Mitaine: I think this was bought on a whim about 2 years ago. Nice QPR. Lovely Chenin. Plenty of extract on a tight frame. Can't wait to revisit this in 3 to 5 years.
2013 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne: recently purchased following a strong recommendation as a ready to drink and enjoyable "cheap" barolo. This bottle was lacking fruit with a hollow mid-palate. This is either in a bad spot or this was a bad bottle. I'll park the others and revisit but right now, this is not very enjoyable.

2001 Martin Ray Santa Cruz Cabernet Sauvignon:

This is a strange 20 year old beast. I didn't decant it nor aerate it. Bottle says 14% abv and I get no heat (always a worry for 2001).The glass and cork show no signs of aging; opaque, long legs, no bricking, perfect natural cork with little saturation. It started out great with blueberries, graphite, anise, and menthol. Great mid' and medium-long finish. After 30 mins, the velvety tannins have become more hairy and there is a new meaty note that I don't love. I think the fruit was just barely hanging on, and the tannins and tertiary notes are starting to overshadow it. So close to being a perfect Cab.

  • 2010 Alain Verset Cornas - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas (10/20/2021)
Opened at 4, decanted at 5:30, first sip at 8. Nose screams of Cornas, wild Syrah fruit all over. This is a heavy heavy Syrah. Loads of tapenade, bacon, dark berries. Tannins are starting to integrate but still present. I’m really impressed by every Alain Verset Syrah I’ve had, and happy to have a bunch to watch age.

For my taste, THIS is at the heights of its best drinking stages.

1988 Lafite
Deliciously complex nose opens with sweet plum-ish red fruit and something else that's hard to pin down - high toned and almost floral; then quickly drops all traces of sweetness in favor of a very masculine mix of earthy, herbaceous, and savory tones; it's all very elegant and even a little austere; initially broad and very textural on the palate, but strict, though it unclenched after about ~90m to become a shade or two lighter and more distinctly red fruited; impressive and compelling, and a great introduction to Lafite; we wondered if it might need even another ~5 years to reach its true peak; good plus

2019 La Vizcaina Bierzo 'La Vitoriana'
Cool, north facing site with majority of vines planted 1890, mainly Mencia but the cuvée with the highest % of Bastarda (Trousseau); whole cluster fermented, aged in old double-sized barrels; showcases cool mid-weight red fruit and a feral, herbaceous undertone; tightly coiled - not in the sense of being astringent or unpleasant - but rather, showing just the littlest hint of the aromatic complexity that's waiting to unfurl over the passage of years; will give the next one ten years; barely good with upside
