Took a really long time to get going (probably almost 6 hours), but once it did it was delicious and exactly what you would expect from Magdelaine. No rush at all to open though obviously.

1971 Cappellano Barolo
This bottle was stood up for so long that the sediment turned into a solid cake, which was marvelous to behold and made decanting easy; youthful ruby color; lacking in soaring florals, this was all savory and earthy notes mingling with the tertiary fruit - to use Winfred and Lee's expression, like a fusion of sweet dark soy sauce and old balsamic vinegar; originally decanted around 6pm, this kept gaining in weight and sweetness throughout the evening, and the last glass (11pm?) was the best; delicious and somehow comforting; very good minus

2018 Halcon Alturas syrah. My first bottle of Halcon, it lived up to the hype. After a day in some 5oz bottles, it surprisingly didn't have the same brightness it originally had but still enjoyable.

2000 Chateau Lanessan

God I love this stuff, so classic, so quaffable. Has a sweaty saddle leather note that I find intoxicating. Hard to imagine many better QPRs, the 1986 Meyney being another.

Mystery wine that my brother in law brought to family gathering..It had been given to him by a business associate from Chile some years ago..my experience with wines from Chile somewhat limited..Lapostolle , Los Vascos, etc
1999 Cremaschi Furlotti Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, from the Maule Valley..Kinda reminds me of a slightly muted version of a 1989 Lynch Bages that I enjoyed about 10 years ago..In any event, nice wine that drank like a mature Bordeaux

Both wines quite big and chewy. Tons of fruit. Had with Ramp Burgers! Quite good pairing.

2013 Medlock-Ames Bell Mountain Cab - This was a pleasant surprise, especially when most of my other 2013's have been so tight. Classic cab profile with outstanding balance - sneaky super fine tannins give some grip to the long finish. Cheers!

Opened a 2001 Christoffel UW spatlese for Mark Wessels who is in towwn and came by. Boy, is this terrific. Fresh, very lightly sweet and perfectly balanced. Hans Leo nailed it in that vintage! More later maybe.

I drank my last 1997 Fichet Tessons (also a Garnet purchase) in 2015 and it was very good. I’ve had better luck aging 1997 white Burgundy than 1996, so I’m not surprised it is still drinking well. I wish I’d bought a lot more.

On a family beach weekend, we opened:

1980 Troplong Mondot - a remarkably good surprise
2006 Bernard Moreau CM 1ere La Maltroie
Egly Ouriet Vignes de Vrigny PM (7/2020 dg)
2018 Suzor “Sunflower” chard - WOW! Never had a better chardonnay <$25.
2018 Andremily Mourvèdre - black tea for days
2020 Pax rosé of trousseau gris - maybe my favorite wine Pax makes, and this vintage is better than 19 was at the same stage, imo
2020 Tercero Cinsault rosé - lip smacking delicious, thanks Larry!

1996 Domaine Michelot Meursault Genevrieres
Some concern as it looked a little brown when opened, but that cleared up to reveal a beautifully mature white Burgundy; remarkably gentle and refined, with a complex nose that defies deconstruction, and not a hint of oxidation (no apples!); the outward placidity belies deep reserves of extract and acidity that should keep good bottles going for a good long while; highly satisfying; good plus

So nice it worked out.

Although, I’m amazed at the chemistry/mechanics of a brown wine turning white.

2007 Rhys Pinot Noir Family Farm.

In its 14th year of life this is still drinking well. Certainly CA in style. Cool red and black fruit and well balance if perhaps lacking tannins to wrap it all together. Still life ahead.
Cheers!

I really enjoyed it. Perhaps more than the syrahs. I am of the opinion that these do not require a long age to show what they are. While this was high octane, clocking in at 15.6%, it also held a ton of interest and didn’t show the alcohol as much as say, a young Sine Qua Non. I got a heavy dose of black tea which is a note I really like in reds when it’s there. Lots of layers and interest, and a lack of any roasted or overripe notes made this a winner in my book.

Wow. Where did you find this?

I visited Bernard Michelot (RIP) in April 1998, my first trip to Burgundy, when the 1996s were the latest wines on offer. The exchange rate was 6 Francs to the dollar. I bought a bottle of 1992 Premier Cru from him, the Charmes I think, but we were traveling light as grad students so I couldn’t load up. I drank it long ago.

It’s heartening to hear that those wines survived and matured well. Loved the old school labels too.

Friend of mine took a flyer on some old bottles unloaded by a restaurant near Seattle (Herbfarm), and we decided to try our luck this weekend. Thank you for that awesome story, and it's a pity that not too many bottles were brought over the pond...
