We had a bottle of NV Nathalie Falmet Champagne Tentation Rosée last night with some superb Indian food, and it was glorious. Breathing it in was like being saddled in a strawberry blanket. It was as richly and deeply colored as some beaujolais. Irresistible. I immediately went looking for more without success.

2015 Gritsch Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Hochrain. Excellent. A broad taste profile - Riesling crossed with Sauternes (without the sweetness)? Really enjoyed this bottle.

And now for something completely different.... 2009 Gillman Estate Matakana, the most idiosyncratic New Zealand wine I ever encountered. Serious cab franc/merlot bottle passing pretty well for some great St Emilion. I know... not kidding...

2001 Ducru Beaucaillou We had this on Saturday with a Flannery hanger. I love the vintage for current drinking and this Ducru was no different. No rush but why wait. A classic.

How was it? I hope it was amazing because I have one bottle of 2009 left.

2017 Silverado Estate Cabernet. Received it in a mixed case from wine.com as a gift. It is a nice, middle of the road take on Napa Cabernet. My wife likes it and so do I.

Well done. I've been backfilling 2000 Ducru every chance I get. Haven't had the 01 yet.

What bottle(s) of wine did I open this month?

February wines so far:

2015 Joan d’Anguera Montsant la Planella
2009 Telmo Rodríguez Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra Sierra de Gredos (blech! while I like the 2010 Pegaso, and love Telmo in general, this 2009 has always disappointed)
2014 Becklyn Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon (sooo syrupy! pure raspberry liqueur, and not my thing at all)
2008 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino
1997 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala (blind Zoom tasting)
NV Pierre Moncuit Champagne Cuvée Hugues de Coulmet Blanc de Blancs Brut (my go-to daily drinker Champagne)
2018 Azienda Agricola F. Tornatore Sicilia Etna Bianco Pietrarizzo
2012 M. Chapoutier Côtes du Roussillon Villages Latour Domaine de Bila-Haut Occultum Lapidem
2017 Suertes del Marqués Valle de la Orotava La Solana (disgusting! rotting, bloody meat on the nose and palate)
2006 Paul Bara Champagne Grand Cru Comtesse Marie de France Bouzy
2018 Quentin Jeannot Santenay Vieilles Vignes
2009 Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco Toscana IGT (blind Zoom tasting)
2016 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée Corcelette (stunning)
1997 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala
1999 Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana IGT (blind Zoom tasting)
2009 Michel Prunier et Fille Chorey-les-Beaune Les Beaumonts

2018 Rivers Marie Napa Valley Cab. My first ever bottle of RM.

Had my first ever bottle of Quivet last weekend also the regular 2018 NV Cab which I really liked a lot (even more than the Myriad). Trying to figure which lists I want to buy off of.

So far it’s riverain and quivet and caterwaul.

We had a Zoom tasting last night that included 2017 and 2018 Bertheau Chambolle. I’d be amazed if anyone could tell they were the same producer and cuvee. The 2017 is pretty classic Bertheau style, light in color with pretty cherry and woodsy aromas. The 2018 seems like a mistake. Several people thought it was Syrah and even when we were told it was Pinot Noir, I don’t think anyone thought it was Burgundy. Weird stuff.

2019 Hofgut Falkenstein “Meyer Nepal”. Has that tangy orange fruit profile across the midpalate and finish that I enjoy so much. Just as good out of 750 mL compared to magnum, but opening the latter earlier this month was more fun :)

I opened my second and final bottle of this tonight. Only buying two bottles of this is one of my greatest wine regrets. 😢
