Opened an 07' Yangarra High Sands Grenache last night. I was very impressed with this wine and think it is drinking at its peak. Great color, wish I had more bottles of this.

2014 Switchback Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon. Less of a fruit bomb than the merlot but good fruit, solid structure, nice finish with notes of oak and vanilla.

1994 Mouton Rothschild. A bit of a throwback, very classic in style, expressive, savory and balanced. I don’t think it will improve, so drink over the next 5 - 10 years. I loved it, and reaffirms my confidence in the vintage.

2004 Moccagatta Bric Balin Barbaresco

Double-splashed. Young, tannic, wood, red fruit laden, appealingly and appropriately perfumed. A modern-styled Piedmont, but with nicely-balanced structure. Good-looking future in, say, 5+ years. B+

2001 L’Evangile - needs air, but then it is lovely. Cherries, earth, licorice, softening tannins, long finish. Delicious. I like the way 2001s are showing now.

2013 Olivier Bernstein Charmes

I really like his style on both 1er and GC. Sadly, so does he and his recent release prices have gone through the roof IMO. Some decent value in the older selections, but nothing to stock up on.

2016 Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau Vouvray Sec Cuvée Silex. Probably the driest Vouvray I have ever tasted. I am used to Vouvray showing a hint (or more) of RS, so this was a little unexpected and took a bit adjusting to (even though the label announced what was coming). Crystalline fruit, ample acid, no hint of oak to me. Like a Savennieres with a bit more fruit. Although I enjoyed it more and more as I drank it (or at least was trying to talk myself into it), this is not my preferred style of Vouvray.

Stay@home dinner 5/23.

A glorious piece of perfectly-done washugyu beef and:

2000 Ch. Latour-Martillac, Pessac-Leognan
Double splashed decanted 1 hour before dinner. Herb, wet leaves, medium-high acidity with green vegetable notes, broth. Surprising on being at lean side of fruit spectrum, given the vintage. Enjoyed the traditional make-up, nonetheless.

With a fun BBQ spread of beef brisket and braised spareribs, plus cornbread and Southern greens, popped a Blllecart-Salmon Rouge and a 2006 Dom Perignon. Love that Billecart, it’s my house champagne - we don’t drink a ton of champagne, but when we do, it tends to be the go-to. We grabbed a bunch of it on sale at Wine.com for $55! Popped the 2006 Dom after. This is when you realize there is a whole ‘nother level of champagne above that Billecart that we love. The power of the attack and breadth of yellow and white fruits, lifted with a healthy mousse, was impressive.

Longing for some white Burgundy, but not in the mood to dive into something that demands full focus, this fits the bill nicely.

Bouzereau-Gruere Meursault 2017.From a plot of 50 year old vine's in de Pellan lieu dit, just behind the domaine.

Nutty and peachy, classicly styled, but not at all fat. All yellow fruits and flowers, supported by just about enough acidity and a little green apple freshness. Good drive and a quitte broad finish. Not a high end example of village Meursault, and nothing complex, but a very nice drink today.

It went great with a piece of Stolwijker farmers cheese.

Yesterday: 2012 Hall Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) and 2016 Northstar Columbia Valley Merlot. Both showed well but nothing spectacular. Did a little bit of self blending, 2 parts cab to 1 part merlot. Not bad. :)

Today: 2016 Aubert Sonoma Coast Pinot. Very approachable. Medium bodied and texture. Hints of raspberry. Yum.

Sadly it was showing seepage, cork was soaked through and it was deep tawny. Still tasted pretty wonderful with a long finish, but not nearly what it should have been.

2018 Kistler Chardonnay Les Noisetiers - just arrived so popped open one. Bright golden color that just sparkles in the glass. Hard to coax a nose out of it but did get some citrus notes. Fairly full mouth feel but not overpowering. Apples, Pineapples and Citrus come thru but especially evident to me was the oak. I hope that blows off in 3 years. While I like a hint of it, it was a bit more than I care for. I don't usually associate Kistler with overly oaked wines. Maybe just this bottle. It was good, I enjoyed it. Much, much better on the 3rd day after it tamed down a bit.

2010 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle MurA - I just pulled this out of the cellar not even looking. I wanted a Sangiovese to drink. Deep, deep garnet color, very unusual - guests noticed too how dark it was. Nice nose that perfumed the glass with florals. Very, very large mouth feel, quite intense wine. Tons of black fruit and well balanced tannins. I was surprised how well this drank now but obviously will keep for a much longer time. It went really well with food too. It wasn't so butch that you had to just sip it. Drank over 2 days. Just as good. I didn't share ;) I will seek this out again.

Journey’s End 2016/Sir Lowery Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch. Medium depth of colour red rim, Loire Cabernet Franc nose, light with mainly mulberry fruit. Fresh tasting and will probably keep 3-4 years. 88 points with some potential to fill out a little.

2002 Hudelot-Noellat Chambolle-Musigny

Wet hay, smoky, countryside dung, and Eucalyptus nose.
Sour cherries, apropos acidity, vegetable broth, delicious restrained sweetness, and sufficient complexity brought by age. Some spice within the lengthy finish.
A village that pleased beyond its class and purchased price point. B+/A-

2004 Luce Della Vite Brunello

Also opened a 1989 Lafite I Coravin'd half of 2 Christmases ago. Longest I have let a Coravin'd bottle sit (I got it for Christmas that year) and it was no worse for wear. Going to finish it off tonight. I don't know how I feel about Lafite. It's so well made, always with ridiculously smooth tannins and lovely floral notes, but it just doesn't ring my bell like a top Burg.
