It’s been a good week of wine consumption.

Tuesday I had the opportunity to taste hru four 2016 Bevans with folks in town from the winery - Ontogeny, Proprietary, Tench EE Red, Tench Cabernet Sauvignon (Ontogeny was my favorite, actually agree with the way Dunnuck ranked in his release today)

Other nights this week:
2011 Mount Eden Estat Cabernet
2016 I Brand Cabernet Franc
2015 Le P’tit Paysan Pape

Tonight having 2013 Birichino Pinot Noir Lilo. First time for this wine, although I’ve had the Saint Georges from Birichino a few times. I’m a fan. I prefer it over the Saint Georges.

2009 Cayuse "God Only Knows" Grenache. My first Cayuse, definitely picked up on the funk everyone talks about. A complex, mature wine totally different from my usual. Really enjoyed it.

Some wines from the last couple days:

2016 PYCM Chassagne-Montrachet VV - Punches way above its weight. Bright orchard fruits, lemon cream, and pronounced minerality. Reticent nose with a whiff of smoke and a dollop of oak. Will improve but very good now with air.

2002 Bruno Clair Gevrey 1er Cazetiers - Brilliant showing. Classy wine with gorgeous layered brambly fruit, a dusting of spice, and fine tannins. Masculine wine but impeccably well balanced and just entering its drinking window. Clair wines can be so burly and concentrated in their youth (but impressive); it's nice to see one at a more adolescent stage. I'd love to buy more if I could find it.

2015 Bruno Clair Vosne 'Les Champs Perdrix' - About as thrilling of a young villages as I can remember. Pure and bold and of higher quality than many exalted 1ers. One to seek out, and I suppose the quality is unsurprising given that Champs Perdrix is nestled between La Tache and Reignots.

2011 Liger-Belair Vosne 1er Chaumes - A lacier, more feminine L-B. This still has the characteristic ripe, polished, layered fruit, but it's a touch more open-knit that I typically find with L-B. Impeccably made and very pretty.

2011 Jadot Gevrey 1er Clos St. Jacques - One of the better 2011s I've had. Still sharp and angular in its youth, but the fruit is deep and pure and this has grand cru stature, albeit in the context of the somewhat lighter 2011 vintage.

2016 David Moreau Santenay 'Cuvee S' - One of the more exciting young producers in Burgundy. All of his wines are killer QPR and this was no exception. Although it's starting to shut down, this still shows pure and bright red and dark fruits in a restrained package.

I enjoyed it, although I think it is different from the cab franc I’m used to drinking. I believe it is a more classic (maybe old world, I’m sure someone could correct me) cab franc style in that it is light in style and almost appeared like a Pinot noir in the glass. I’m not the best at wine descriptors but I thought it was green, fruity and frankly if you’d told me it was a Pinot Noir I might’ve believed you.

Hugues Godmé Champagne Grand Cru Rosé - wow, this far exceeded expectations. Lots of energy with good cut from citrus acidity that keeps nice cherry and strawberry flavors fresh and lively. There is also a mineral streak that runs through to the finish. Great value and will improve further with additional age. First experience with this producer and I will be looking to buy more.

1964 Franco Fiorina Barolo. The bottle was wrapped in saran when I got it and the label look suspiciously immaculate. The cork was short but also weirdly intact. Smelled ok; doing the audouze thing but will decant for sediment just before dinner. We shall see but I am not getting my hopes up

I just had the last glass of a 1999 Dunn Napa Cab that I opened over the weekend. This would not be pegged as a Napa Cab. A beautiful wine with aromatics that draw you in. The palate has refreshing acidity, tobacco, cherry, bell pepper, and a nice long finish. Tannins are present but they are soft. A fantastic wine at 13.3% alcohol.

Had a really nice bottle of 2006 Janesse CdP VV last evening.

2006 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (2/6/2019)
Delicious CdP. PnP and drank with leftover Osso bucco. This 12 year old is everything a CdP should be. Concentrated, balanced and hedonistic. Dark fruits, cassis, licorice. Lingering finish. The last glass was the best.. I would open about an hour prior to drinking. Drink or Hold. I will try to hold my last bottle for a few years. (97 pts.)

Turn 43 tomorrow:

‘76 SLV
‘76 SLV Lot B
‘76 Cheval Blanc

Both Stag’s Leaps led with eucalyptus, but also fairly youthful with plenty of fruit. Lot B slightly more concentrated. Cheval great and improved over time but trailed last night’s mini-horizontal of ‘82 Calon Segur and Certan De May that were incredible. I need a night off to recuperate.

2015 Pichon Baron: caught this on a youthful peak - rich, lush red fruit without any stewed / pruney character; savory nuances to keep things interesting and a touch of grip from the silky tannins; no heat at all on the nice long finish

Thanks! Tonight I took it easy but did have one really special wine. We went to Smyth (Chicago) for my birthday. I was out of ‘76’s without making a special trip to offsite storage, so opted for a ‘71 Latour A Pomerol— and wow—pretty incredible. I’d taken a chance on this vintage based on Jeff Leve’s notes and a great ‘55 I got to try last summer. The ‘71 reminded me of the ‘88 Certan de May that I drink fairly regularly—just slightly softer and more evolved. The color was still fairly dark and it showed no signs of decline over a few hours of drinking. It was a great treat with an amazing meal.

2014 Herman Story Milk & Honey

How was this? Have some 2014 Herman Story. Including this bottle. Been trying to decide when to open it.
Russel's wines are always big, bold, sexy, in your face!! This was drinking well at five years but would like to see how it ages down the road.
