What bottle of wine did you open today?

#1 Post by Aubrey Lloyd »

Happy Wednesday everyone!
I really didn't know what to open this evening so i closed my eyes ( after I was in my cellar) and blindly pulled out a 2005 Domaine Alfred Califa Pinot Noir. Popped and poured. Beautiful bouquet. Th aroma fills the glass nicely. Tasted bright very ripe cherries with a little tobacco on the finish. I thought this wine would have been over the hill but its quit pleasant.

What bottle of wine did you open today? Cheers!! [cheers.gif]

2009 Bedrock Sonoma County Zin. This is the first Bedrock my wife and I have ever tried. After much talk about their wines and the fact that the first red wine my wife ever likes was Ravenswood Zin, I decided to buy a mixed case from a fellow forum member. I decided to start off with a vineyard blend that was ready. I will move to another single vineyard one this weekend when I have a few hours to decant.

I loved the wine, my wife liked it. I think she would have loved it if it decanted for about an hour.

I think Bedrock is going to be one of my favorite wineries to purchase from, hopefully I am of the wait list soon. Although, there is,plenty of people sharing the wines out there.
Thanks,

2009 Chateau Pezat on the rec of a fellow board member. Saw this locally and decided to buy it. Unfortunately not so good. Raisiny roasted flavors that I hope are not indicative of the vintage, since this is my first '09 BDX. Maybe a storage issue. Not undrinkable, and maybe some good fruit and some lightly floral elements, but flawed, either the bottle or the wine itself.

Baby killing but i'm trying to decide whether to buy more 2009, or just more 2010.

Wow, if my ex wife was over, I'd have finished the bottle of Bourbon (and maybe opened another).

Went to grab a 96 Lanessan and this bottle came out of slot so said what the hell, lets give it a try.

1997 Kenwood Sonoma County Merlot - Fantastic little Sonoma merlot here. A knockoff of a high end right bank bordeaux. Lovely fruit, damp earth, freshness, dusty tannins. LONG earthy aftertaste. Not sure why I cellared or even bought this wine, but sure am glad I did. Fantastic.

Couldn't have been more than $7 when new. I think it was probably a gift as I have no recollection of purchasing it. Wish I had some more!

2005 Frédéric Magnien Pinot Noir Bourgogne

I can't remember how I came to possess this bottle, and the wine was just as forgettable.
My wife was experimenting with a new recipe and needed a Burgundy pairing for calibration.

Sipping on a Rivesaltes Ambre (opened yesterday) to fill the gap.

I liked it. Showing some nice old vine characteristics that put it a step above your average $20 Zin. I bought another 1/2 case so I can follow it.

Rough night for us - Whisperkool is on the fritz (only cooling to about 65 degrees so had to call and have someone come out and look at it) so we broke our no wine this week and opened :

2009 Siduri Keefer Ranch - Corked
2007 Scherrer Syrah - nothing wrong with it but not showing much right now - first Scherrer I had with less than stellar results
2008 Crognolo - Finally. Nice big wie that needs time but after an hour of air really opened up while we caught up on conference tournaments and some DVR'd shows.

A 2000 Ravenswood Sonoma County Chardonnay 'Sangicomo Vineyard' - fill a half inch below the capsule, cork lightly colored a ragged half inch; color a medium yellow-gold, light oxidation, good white and yellow fruit, barely adequate acidity; with a medium long fruity finish. It was enjoyable with a New England-style Clam Chowder,
cheers,

How is this? Rather intrigued by this series.
The standard ones are the New York Malmsey, the Boston Bual, Savannah Verdelho, and Charleston Sercial. Each named after a city(Port actually) which received large amounts of Maderia in the 18th and 19th Centuries. All are pretty good and a good introduction to Madeira. I like the Boston Bual the most. There are other, more expensive bottlings as well. There is the Benjamin Franklin (medium sweet), New Orleans Reserve (based on the style of Terrantez although there is only a little Terrantez in the blend), the Porto Moniz Verdelho (a town on the island where the fruit was grown), and the Imperial Malmsey. These are a step up from the regular series. I like the Imperial Mamsey, haven't had the Porto Moniz Verdelho yet. I understand that the Rare Wine Company will release several other bottlings later this year.
