It's New Year's Weekend....What Is Everyone Popping?

#1 Post by Bill Tex Landreth » December 30th, 2011, 2:32 pm

Tonight will be 2009 Hobel Cab and a mystery wine from Napa that just showed up for starters. Others TBD at Denny's.

Tomorrow will start with some 2007 Donnhoffs. Reds and Bubbles forthcoming.
It's not easy being drunk all the time. Everyone would be doing it if it were easy.

Sweet! That should only be about $450/bottle.

We have no plans cuz a babysitter is next to impossible to get this weekend. Think I'll open a 08 Dujac Malconsorts for us. Leisurely home cooked meal. Prob asleep by 10:30 on NYE...that's how I roll in the OC.

Bringing the wine as friends are cooking and have some sparkling: 02 Scholium Project Sylphs, 1982 Ridge Monte Bello en Magnum, something sweet in a 375 in case there is still thirst. Picking back-up bottles shortly.

We're having a few friends over for small plates and with one exception, none of them are wine people. I still feel it's my duty to try to educate them, but anything expensive is wasted on them. The last time I did this, the crowd favorite was Hogue Sauvignon Blanc which I normally use for cooking (but it's OK to drink in a pinch as well). Sigh.

Might open some Lapierre Morgon for the few of us who care, but I have a feeling I'll be mixing more pitchers of Cosmopolitans than I'll be pulling corks. At least no one will be requesting shots of Jager....

Hosting our annual New Years Eve bash...everyone upstairs will be drinking up the bubbly. But down in the cellar...the boys in the band and some stragglers will be drinking up anything that makes them happy! Damn I love it! It gives me an excuse to try all of the stuff I've been cellaring but usually find excuses to hold on to. 2011 was great! I hope your 2012 is marvelous!

My wife and I are going to a local hotel and taking MV Krug and '90 Mongeard-Mugneret Richebourg. We will be celebrating the life of our little 16 yo Westie (see my Avitar) that we had to euthanize today..she provided us with 16 years of tremendous happiness. She will be so missed!

16 years seems like an excellent run, good on her. Had the 90 Mongeard Mugneret Richebourg and the Krug not so long ago, the Krug is always top and the Mongeard Mugeret was great as well, still quite primary, a bit of signature, be interested in your thoughts. Cheers Mike

I'll tell you after I get the bill.

*smh*.

It's actually a package. Two mags of grey goose and a mag of Moët (bleh) and a certain number of admissions. Pretty reasonable when I was told the price for a table at a supposedly hopping new years party. But typically a mag would run over $700 or so, the hotter the club the pricier.

The last time I went to a club with table service was with curry and we also had mags of grey goose :D (and hot skanks everywhere)

My first entry here.

So will start with wishing everyone a Happy NewYear from Denmark...
I will have a 2004 Barolo Roagna La Rocca e la Pira, will be interesting wine to try.
For the bubbles i think it will be a cheap Muscato D'Asti if i decide otherwise
i will go with a G.Chiquet N.V Champagne Cuvee de Reserve

Very sorry for your loss, with which I can identify all too well. We lost our adorable little tuxedo cat Pinot, also 16 years old, just after Thanksgiving and have been drinking to his memory every night since then. After drinking a lot of Pinot over the last few weeks, though, tonight will start with a Chapuy Blanc de Blancs and then either a 1990 L'Evangile or 1990 Latour.

Gosh, I really need to start working this out. My guess is I'll start with something German, move on to something red and Californian, then have something bubbly. Not being a Champagne regular, I took a recommendation from my LWM on a grower Rose from Jean Vesselle (Bouzy). I'll probably give that one a shot tonight/tomorrow a.m.

Happy New Year, Berserkerland! [cheers.gif]

Tonight will be all about the bubbles, so last night I stayed away from Champagne: '95 Chave Hermitage Blanc, '97 Pibaron, '00 Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux... closing down 2011 in style.

'95 Chave is fully mature with intense nuttiness and marzipan aromatics, reminiscent of aged Champagne. Very round up front, with great persistence on the palate. A wonderful bottle.

'97 Pibaron was served from 9 litre, and the large format kept it incredibly youthful. Roasted meats and black fruits on the nose, with tannins that make it a wine you chew more than drink.

'00 Bachelet GC Les Corbeaux: Popped and poured, and initially I thought it was showing a little green on the nose, but it blew off quickly. Complex secondary aromatics of black fruits, beef stock, and black licorice, with fine grained tannins. Good length, with an entirely black fruit flavor profile. 2000 is a vintage I'm really liking right now.
Birthdays was the worst days, now we sip Champagne when we thirs-tay

Thinking about a mag of Coudert Roilette Tardive 2010.

Any ideas on what sort of a decant this needs? Am thinking a 5pm decant for a 9pm dinner????

Also on deck….94 Coudoulet de Beaucastel and maybe some 04 Jasmin Cote Rotie.

Bubbles will be mags of Legras BdB Grand Cru.

Starting with 2005 Sbragia Monte Rosso cab. Not sure what might follow, although I do have my last '99 Felsina Rancia Riserva standing up downstairs.

Really? Damn, table service has gotten really crazy since my Le Prive days. What's a mag go for these days at da club?
I'll tell you after I get the bill.

*smh*.

It's actually a package. Two mags of grey goose and a mag of Moët (bleh) and a certain number of admissions. Pretty reasonable when I was told the price for a table at a supposedly hopping new years party. But typically a mag would run over $700 or so, the hotter the club the pricier.

The last time I went to a club with table service was with curry and we also had mags of grey goose :D (and hot skanks everywhere)

Better than mags of Grey Goose - you get 1.75l (and extra half liter in all). Cocktails tonight at Aviary (Jello shots are threatened). N.V. Pierre Péters Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Cuvée de Réserve for breakfast

Our own unlabeled, unreleased, light and aromatic blend of Albarino, Verdelho, Chardonnay, and Petit Manseng, aka 2011 Carte Blanche. What can I do? I'm cheap...
