2007 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes- France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (12/4/2011)
Ok, got the tree up, the kids made a gingerbread house, we roasted a bone in rack of pork, so this seemed like the one to open. Dark, violet core with a garnet rim. Powerful nose showing brooding dark fruit and worlds of spice. Complex and a bit perfumey as well. Full bodied, deep, powerful wine which picks up more weight with air. Plums and blackberry accentuated by black pepper. The fruit is a bit sweet, but not flabby or raisined. The spicy components persist all the way through the finish. This is low to medium acidity, and boasts a bit more tannic structure than I expected. Will check in again tomorrow.
The second day shows a bit more of a clean, aromatic nose with more floral components. In the mouth, it introduces a pronounced fig component especially on the mid palate. It has put on some weight overnight, but it is kept in balance with some interesting texture from the tannins.
