Got any obscure stuff?

Afternoon all,

I was flicking through my list in Cellar Tracker and I was surprised that I owned some vanishingly unpopular… no… perhaps ‘obscure’ would be a better word, wines. Below I have listed those wines where the total community holdings are less than 10 bottles. As you can see, my modest collection is largely an assortment of interesting bottles rather than cases of really flash stuff.

Wine: My bottles/Total community bottles
2005 Domaine Alain Michelot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Chaignots 1/2
2004 Domaine Arlaud Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 1/10
2008 Domaine Arlaud Clos St. Denis 1/4 (and that one is a mag… ho ho ho)
2009 Domaine Francois Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes 1/1 (also a mag, I love big ones)
1996 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru 1/2
2002 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton-Le Charlemagne 1/3
2008 Domaine du Colombier Hermitage 2/3
2008 Domaine du Colombier Hermitage Blanc 1/4
2006 Domaine du Colombier Hermitage Blanc 1/4
2006 J. Confuron-Cotetidot Clos Vougeot 1/7
2005 Dujac Fils et Père Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey 1/2 (another mag)
1998 Germano Ettore Barolo Prapò 1/4
1997 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese #10 1/6
2005 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Auslese #31 1/2
2006 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Chapelle-Chambertin 1/5
1999 Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben-Thanisch) Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling Auslese 1/3
1973 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune Cuvée Exceptionelle 1/1
2002 Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Rouge Belle Dame 1/8
2002 Van Volxem Scharzhofberger Riesling Pergentsknopp 1/7
2002 Van Volxem Wiltinger Gottesfuss Riesling Alte Reben 1/3 (and my carer has the other 2 [wink.gif] )

For completeness, my wine most widely owned wine is:
1998 Château de Beaucastel 1/8465 (they make one hell of a lot of wine, all right)

I was rather surprised by some of these. Sure, white Hermitage and 73 CSH might be rare as hen’s teeth, but some of those I thought would be more widely owned.

I’d be intrigued to know what wines other people own that the wider Cellar Tracker-using world seems to have passed by. If the mood takes you then do share!

Cheers,
David.

1967 Ste. Michelle White Oak Cabernet Sauvignon - Washington, CA

It’s the oldest bottle I own, the curiousity probably out weighs any drinking pleasure it may provide - although rumor has it that Andre Tchelistcheff made/consulted on these old wines – so who knows.

Hmm… I should take a look, that would be an interesting report to run. But in the meantime… that 73 CSH is insanely tasty. mmmmm

Will - that’s close to the first vintage CSM made. In fact, it might be the first vintage. INteresting bottle to have.

Hi Rick,

It is my only birth-year wine (sadly only a good vintage for CSH, Cornas and opinionated loonies). I popped a bottle on my 30th and was amazed by its crystalline purity and coruscatingly intense expression of minerality - a stunning wine experience that wowed all my wine chums. I look forward to popping my remaining bottle when I reach the next significant age milepost.

Cheers,
David.

PS. Oh I suppose the Pol Roger 1973 I had for the 30th was rather spiffy, but it fell apart within about 4 minutes of pouring.

David-

Look to Rioja in '73. You’ll be very pleasantly surprised.

Cheers,

Brad

Cheers Brad, I’ll keep my eyes open for some.

2005 Château de Varennes Savennières (30 bottles total on CT)
2005 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Savigny-lès-Beaune (30 bottles total on CT)

About the most obscure stuff I have…

You call that stuff obscure?? Try cellaring some lagrein, mondeuse, xinomavro…

Interesting. How do you run this report?

I have several with 10 or less in current CT inventory (not counting consumed, although it doesn’t make a huge difference). My list certainly isn’t as interesting as yours, but here it is:

2005 Tolo Cellars Syrah Reserve 3/7

And my most widely-owned bottle:
2004 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia 1/2907

How do you generate this list on CT?

I have a very small collection (less than 100 bottles), so I did it manually, using the cellar view’s side panel in the CT Beta.

1960 Louis Martini “Mountain Barbera”

1989 Adelsheim Pinot Noir Seven Springs Vineyard 1/2
1991 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Seven Springs Vineyard 1/6
2006 Domaine de Bellivière Coteaux du Loir Le Rouge-Gorge 4/14
2007 La Casaccia Barbera Vigna Santa Anna 4/5
2008 La Casaccia Grignolino Poggeto 1/1
2005 Enológica Temera Ribeira Sacra Themera VV 1/9
2006 Domaine Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rouge 3/8
1998 Château Meylet 1/9
1992 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Hopkins Vineyard (had to create this wine in CT)

Correct, right now I don’t include the global quantity as a column in the cellar view of an individual user, so there is no way to sort on it for now. Sorry. Longer term that is something I can add (the data is already calculated and sitting in a table that is joined to that report), but my main concern would be user confusion.

I suspect I have quite a few of these. Here are some at random:

1954 Antonio Vallana e Figlio Piemonte Nebbiolo Spanna 1/1
1954 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo 1/1
[both my birthyear wines from a very crappy year]

1957 Cappellano Barbaresco 1/2
1961 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo 1/2 (and I know the guy who has the other!)
1962 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo 1/1
1967 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Speciale Pora 1/2
1969 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon Réserve du Fondateur 1/2
1971 Vietti Barolo Briacca 1/5
1973 Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Tokaji Aszú 3 Puttonyos 1/1
1973 Inglenook Charbono 2/3
1973 Freemark Abbey Petite Sirah York Creek 2/2
1976 Gerhard Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen Riesling Beerenauslese 1/1
1976 Jean Astier Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2/2
1978 Lionel J. Bruck Vosne-Romanée Chateau de Vosne-Romanee 1/1
1978 Obester Cabernet Sauvignon 1/1
1980 Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Recioto 1/1
1982 Monticello Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Corley Reserve 1/3
1989 Cline Cellars Mourvedre Reserve 1/5
1985 Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Grésy Barbaresco Martinenga Camp Gros 1/10

And the only magnum of 1982 Stags’ Leap Winery Petite Sirah.

I can’t believe someone else actually has a bottle of 1985 Ravenswood Zinfandel Vintners Blend!

But I do apparently have the only bottle of 1985 B.R. Cohn Chardonnay Olive Hill Estate Vineyards!

Brad is definitely correct on Rioja, but I also like CA Cabernet from 1973. And the one Chablis I’ve had (a Drouhin ‘Clos’) was wonderful however I have no idea how typical that might be.

You call that stuff obscure? Try cellaring some Regent, Optima, or Oseleta

Having said that, if you want to drink some aged Lagrein sometime I have about 10 lined up and ready

My oldest is the 2000 Praepositus. Another Adige dinner sounds like fun - got any more rossara?
