decent deal
It's at the original winery release price. I would say it's a damn good deal on a great wine.
Anyone experience TCA problems with this wine like Wine Spectator?
Years ago I went to an offline where the wines were served double blind. I id'd a bottle of 2001 Ch Montelena as corked before it was unveiled however very few if any of the other attendees agreed. Take that for what it's worth... not much. I own a few bottles of this wine but haven't opened one myself.

It's over now, replaces with 2000 Clos Pegase. CT only has one note since 2009, and that was last year. The average CT drinking window was through last year. Thoughts?

Bad vintage that is now eleven years old. EASY pass.
It's not easy being drunk all the time. Everyone would be doing it if it were easy.

This was the vintage that started the TCA debate from Laube and the winedictator. He gave the wine 69pts

From Winespectator:

"Barrett acknowledged that the winery was battling TCA after Wine Spectator showed him lab tests done this summer that indicated some Chateau Montelena Cabernets, including the 2001 and 1997 Montelena Estate bottlings, had low levels of TCA."

Chateau Montelena in Napa Valley has undertaken a major renovation of its cellar after discovering that both the winery and its wines have been contaminated by TCA (2,4,6 trichloranisole), a chemical compound responsible for the off-flavors in corky wines.

Winemaker Bo Barrett said Chateau Montelena, best known for its Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays, began testing its facility for a possible TCA problem in 2002. Recent vintages had repeatedly shown a musty character, he said, which the winery believed came from TCA-tainted corks.

Barrett admitted that it is likely that TCA was part of the winery's "house style" and that it was present in most of the wines at a low level. TCA "may have been one of the components of our wines dating back to the 1970s," he said, "especially when the wines weren't fruity.""

I know that LastBottle is still new but my initial experience is that customer service is pretty much non-existent. You place orders and they go into some black hole with no information on shipping. I like the offerings but hope the customer service gets a lot better.

They have a contact e-mail, and I know they have been posting on this board quite a bit. I haven't ordered anything from them yet, but have you tried to reach them and been unsuccessful?

I have emailed them unsuccessfully but will keep trying as I am waiting for a shipment and hope to get it before the weather turns hot. I will give them the initial benefit of the doubt as they maybe have growing pains but it would be nice to hear something is or isn't shipping from your order after more than a week. (or at least respond to emails).

Hi Greg! Thank you for the order.

The order was placed on the 14th (Sat) and we wrote you on the 16th (Monday) to confirm that you wanted the order to ship. You replied that night and said that the weather was good in IL and for us to ship. It was then shipped and a tracking number should have been automatically sent to your email (I can resend if it did not arrive).

We then got an email from you yesterday around 9pm and haven't quite had time to respond but will do so this morning.

Cory-
Seeing as you would like to discuss the details of my specific shipment here instead of personal/business email, no email response was ever sent back to me after I asked for the shipment to go out before the weather turns hot so, yes, I would like to have an email with shipping details sent to me. I would have been more than willing to update this post saying that I had been contacted and everything was handled properly.Thanks.

I have placed 2 orders and both times received an email the next business day, Cory has also responded to a few email questions promptly.

Thoughts on the phelps cab? Can get current vintage at Costco for about $12 more, so just wondering how the 03 compares.

I'm wondering if they'll have any sweet wines on the website. Most of the deal websites don't really have them... I guess they might be hard to push. Although if the price was low enough...

My wife loves phelps so I pulled the trigger on a 6-pack (free shipping). This is probably in its ideal drinking window, but should be for short-term consumption. I generally find phelps to be consistent year-to-year with its key characteristics holding true.

Well, I liked the '03 better than the '04 (though the critics preferred the '04). I got my order in (and already received the wine this morning!)

Has anyone had this wine recently? Original WS notes say to drink by 2009. Is it drinking well still or past its prime?

Picked up a 6 pack. Strange it showed no shipping charges no matter the type of delivery, so I picked overnight. Once I sent the payment, shipping charges came up. Not much, so I'm not complaining, just strange.

Never mind, glitch in their system, Cory promptly took care of it.

I would say load up on the Reignac if you are a fan of the modern, ripe Bordeauxs...or Cali Cab.

Hmm, interesting. I just ordered some as well as I had some credits. Lot's of CT notes showing corked bottles too. I guess I'll try them pretty quick after delivery to make sure they're alright. It sounds like Last Bottle stands behind their wine and will take care of you if you get a bad bottle or batch.

The Reignac is tempting for me, as I've enjoyed that wine several times and I like 375s. But cellartracker is full of reviews complaining about oxidized 375's. Also, looking at my notes on Reignac, I've also run into a couple oxidized 750s.

But it sure didn't take long to disappear. Not a Prum, which I suspect may linger for a while

Neal, I personally have not had the 2004. People in Napa that I align with pretty well called it a hot, disjointed mess that was undrinkable. I think the team has dialed it back a notch or two moving forward.

My first bottle of Girard was bad. Past the expiration date, tasted musty, vinegary. I asked Cory if he wants me to open another one, or just return the lot.

Any other people who have opened up any of the Girards?

Linda, not corked IMO. It tasted like an old wine that is over the hill. If Cory gives me the ok to open another one, I will know for sure if the wine is just dead, or I had a bad bottle.

I just popped another bottle (my third) and I am very happy with the wine. I concur with a lot of the recent reviews on cellartracker. I guess Otto got a bad batch but regardless I stand 100% behind what was sold. If the wine is not sound when you receive it, I will take it back no questions asked (like it did for Otto).

I'm not saying this is an amazing, show stopping wine. But I do think it is a solid deal at $19.
