TN: 2005 J. Davies Cabernet Sauvignon

  • 2005 J. Davies Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain (1/7/2009)
Initial aroma of picking tomatoes in the garden with vegetal notes continuing on the palate. However, the predominate flavor was that of grape juice. Yes, wine is fermented grape juice but one doesn’t usually expect a cab to taste like Welch’s without the sugar. Based on admitedly just one experience, they need to step it up a notch to have a Cab worthy of the excellent sparkling wines from Schramsberg. (81 pts.)

Funny thing, I had this a few months back and got the tomato thing too, and was pretty underwhelmed, as well. An underfilled claret-style Cab does indeed seem like a misplaced effort for an outfit like Schramsberg. Where’s the beef?

I have never had an inspiring still wine made by a producer whose main business is sparkling. They always seem to pick early due to their obsession with the acidity required for a bubbly.
