2003 Vignalta Syrah Monte Rey - USA, California, Central Coast, Monterey (2/1/2009)
Tomato aroma is very prominent without being stewy along with some iron laden rocks and light raspberry. Tart fruits with touch of sweet oak in the mid palate but only a touch. Nice balance with a touch of bite at the end. Worked well with meat balls, red sauce and pasta. Nicely balanced wine that seems to be without an identifiable origin but definitely not an “international” style wine. Very good and very unique…and only $20!

Interesting selection from Jon. A rare California winner from him but not a Cali Syra you are likely to encounter often. Maybe Syrah by way of Italy is the best description…but its not rustic either. Just good and food friendly.
