TN: 2001 Ojai Syrah "Thompson Vineyard"

  • 2001 Ojai Syrah Thompson Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County (2/1/2009)
Cracked this to watch the Super Bowl. Initially started out a bit closed and not showing much but an hour in the glass helped it open up. Shows ripe blackberry, anise, smoke, and a little black licorice and black pepper. On the finish, some slightly chalky tannins and plum skin linger for what seems to be 30 seconds or so… It’s a pretty big but nimble Syrah that is drinking well now but shows promise for over the next 5 years. Very tasty. (92 pts.)

Thanks for the note. Just yesterday, I was moving a bottle of this in my cellar and was wondering when I should crack it.

Fantastic. I just opened the 2001 Jaffurs Thompson, admittedly a younger drinker, and it was firing on all cylinders. I’m happy to hear on the Ojai and would expect another 5 years on that bottle without missing a beat.

I’m sitting on a few 2001 Tensley Thompsons. They seemed to be in a weird phase about a year ago.

Tony-love the Thompson Vineyard bottling…had this about a month ago…very good.
