80% Chenin Blanc, 20% Viognier
A- Not much nose. Tiny hint of reduction up front, some floral aromas.
T- Cantaloupe up front going into lemon and a slightly bitter (but not unpleasantly so) grapefruit rind, some white flowers, peach, pear, and a nice full mouthfeel. Good acid up front but softens at the finish. Great QPR.
Bought at the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant in SF for $11.50. Will have to get more of this for summer drinking.
That wine was a staple for me several years ago and I forgot about it. If it was $11.50 at FPWM it should be around $9.50 at Safeway, Longs or Ralphs. I love Debbie Zachareas dearly, but given her location the prices can’t be competitive with what chains charge.
Gotta love Chenin Blanc- a grape that has been poorly cultivated inAmerica, and over-maligned for it. If grown in the right place, and raised with respect in the vineyard and winery, Chenin can make wines that are profound. If you’ve had an old (40 plus year) Chenin from Vouvray, you know exactly what I mean. A grape that is on my “someday” list of wines to make- this one sounds like fun, and I’ll have to check this out.
Love this wine (I also sell it) and it is a great value year in and year out. A definate summer quaffer.
Chappellet has some old chenin vines, too. They are ripping some out but I understand they are going to replant with chenin again. Which is good news as far as I’m concerned.
Look for the “Shy Chenin” CB (http://www.shywines.com" onclick=“window.open(this.href);return false;) from the people who also bring you http://www.basketcasewine.com” onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, Sean and Chenin (yes, that’s her name) Carlton. It’s from the Horse Heaven Hills.
