TN: Syrahs - Delas Frères, Favia, Relic, Martinelli

  • 2003 Delas Frères Hermitage Les Bessards - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage (4/12/2009)
Decanted 3 hours, consumed over 2. Completely agree with Dan’s assessment of this wine. Brooding, dark, magnificent. Incredible balance, complexity and focus. Dark fruits, smoked meat, black olives, earthy. Drank side by side with a 2004 Favia Sal Y Miel syrah from Bennett Valley and the two were virtually indistinguishable.
  • 2004 Favia Syrah Sal y Miel - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley (4/12/2009)
Decanted 3 hours, drank over the following 2. Deep rich color. Pungent nose of black fruit, smoke, floral and baking spices. Very viscous, wonderful balance, earthy, smoky, bacon, cracked pepper. In a real good place right now.
  • 2007 Relic Wines Syrah Napa Valley - USA, California, Napa Valley (4/18/2009)
Decanted one hour, drank over the next 2. Dark, viscous, thick. Smoky, earthy, fruity, meaty. Complex palate, open fire pit burning exotic woods to char steaks, pork and game. Black fruit, cracked pepper. Nice finish. Drink now for pure hedonistic pleasure, and hold on to some to enjoy its evolution.
  • 2004 Martinelli Syrah Terra Felice - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (4/18/2009)
Decanted three hours, drank over the following 3. Sort of a simple syrah, not much depth, not much spice, not much acidity, a very smooth & easy drink. Not interesting by any means.
