TN: 2006 Walter Hansel Chardonnay, The North Slope Vineyard

I opened this today in part because I read RMP’s note from issue 180 in which he advocated drinking this bottle soon. I have to say that’s probably right, but I’ll bet this has a good year or two left.

At the moment, the North Slope is drinking very well. If you like creamy, buttery, toasty California Chardonnay, look elsewhere because this is not for you. There was subtle toasty oak in the first half-hour after opening, but it went away and mineral, white peach and pear took over. Good balance. The finish is penetrating and lingering. I wish I could get more on the nose, but otherwise I like this a lot. For a mid-thirties price tag, I think this is a value.
