France: the "other" wine producing nation

Basically it means Italy and Spain have uncrowned France as the biggest producers of swill in the world.

It’s good that France finally comes to term with the fact that we don’t have the structures to produce cheap quality wine, and that producing mass-market plonk is a dilution of the “brand”. Quality > quantity.

Excellent points both. However, said “swill” was mostly produced for consumption within France and although the production may now have moved to Spain and Italy … it largely remains the French citizenry that are still drinking the vast majority of that vin-de-crap which never even winds up being exported; as the domestic market consumes such huge volumes of it.

At least here in the USA, many drink such renowned wines from bag-in-the box ventures and those under $5 bottles from the vast vineyard lands in the Central Coast of CA.
