Looking for a Digital Thermometer

I am looking for a digital recording thermometer that has the ability to…

plug into my computer (mac)
Record temps every 15 minutes or so
be able to graph the temps, etc…
min/max
Wireless connectivity isn’t a big issue as I dont have wireless at this cellar location
Battery driven (not a plug-in)

Anything else I am missing?

Lasers…definitely lasers.

add humidity:

Everything is seemingly compatible with PC…(need Mac)

I seem to remember (I think it was Scott Manlin, but I could be wrong) spoke about sensors that are in the cellar and then you can remotely check it online. I don’t know if that’s the kind of thing you’re looking for, but if it was him, you might want to ask

I don’t know if this was the company, but would something like this work?

Hi Michael, take a look at this:

Peter…also found this

http://www.microdaq.com/occ/u14/u14-001.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Don’t really care to $ for a monitoring service…and there is no Wi-Fi at this cellar location (well, none that I could use).

Michael, that should work just fine, but if your cellar ever floods to a depth of 200 meters, you’ll wish you’d bought the other one. [rofl.gif]

I just got an Extech TH10: http://www.extech.com/instruments/product.asp?catid=66&prodid=415" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

BUT it does not appear they support software for Macs. It’s a nice tool, though. I’m collecting data for a potential semi-passive cellar location.

LaCrosse makes the weather direct.

Weather Direct® - The Gateway" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It’s wired (with wireless as well), uploads, and data is viewable on a website. I believe that’s all free or costs something like $10/year after the first year.

Some folks posting at various places seem to be pretty happy, but I have not tried it personally (although I’m intrigued).

I am pretty much obsessed with these things. In addition to an assortment of toys from Radio Shack and various wine catalogs, I have a SensorProbe2 from AKCP with two temperature/humidity sensors - http://www.akcp.com/products/sensorprobe-series/sensorprobe2/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I also have a La Crosse WeatherDirect TX60.

The SensorProbe2 is a scientific tool It is very nice, is connected via wired Ethernet to my LAN, and sends me e-mails if various alert conditions are ever met. There are no recurring fees. As memory serves, these cost a couple hundred bucks.

The La Crosse stuff is very much consumer oriented, but it seems to work. For $10/year, you can view a website with your cellar temperature data, get e-mail alerts, etc. It is pretty cool, and I was just able to check that one location in my cellar is 54.1 degrees, that a different location is 53.1 degrees, and that the humidity is at 75%. I think I paid like $30 for this. If I were you, I would start with this La Crosse setup. If you need more capabilities, it is easy enough to buy a SensorProbe of something similar later with very little money wasted.

Best,

Andrew

I use Cellar Sensor to monitor air temp, bottle temp and humidity in my cellar and air temp and humidity in my humidor. I have it set up to send me an email alert if the temp or humidity go out of the user set range for each monitor. I also have the iphone/ipad/itouch app that gives me current readings from each sensor on the fly.

Love the system. They way I have it set up it lets me know if I have an issue with my chiller, my humidor or if my humidifiers need to be refilled… VERY happy customer of Cellar Sensor

There is a company that makes these battery operated disks that take measurements then you hook them up to your computer and it gives you all that data. If there is internet access in the vicinity, you can run a wireless ethernet cube or a repeater in the cellar and then you can have internet access… Cellar Sensor needs internet access and to be able to communicate with the sensors from the base station (the base station plugs into an ethernet port)

Just bringing this thread back to life.

I was thinking about getting the La Crosse device seeing I am on the road so much and it looks like it hooks 200ft to the main device on the internet.

Has anyone discovered something new /changed in the Digital Thermometer space?

I will be upgrading my ADT system to allow me to monitor temp, but, not sure they monitor humidity. Have a call into my ADT guy. If anything, the ADT upgrade will be nice to set my house temperature the day I am heading home from a trip.

I have been using the Weatherdirect system for about 6 months and I am VERY happy with it. Occasionally (twice in the last 2 months) the sender will drop out, but I get an e-mail that it hasn’t seen my sender for a while. Once it came back on its own and once I had to reset the power to the wireless receiving unit. Online storage is about the most recent thirty days of recordings (~2900 - 30 days * 24 hours * 4 readings per hour), that EASILY downloads to Excel for long term tracking and graphing.

NO cost for tracking. $10 per year for cell and e-mail notification of out of range parameters you choose - first year is FREE. To me it is a GREAT deal.

I have seen complaints that the 200 ft range claim as a bit exaggerated through walls and floors. My sender and receiver are about 25 feet apart through one brick wall, one plaster&lath wall (bot sides) and/or 3/4" subfloor/3/4" oak floor. Signal strength is consistently 4-5 bars (with 5 being the max).

For $50 you are set up (no affiliation, blah, blah, blah…):

Just what I wanted to hear. Thank you so much. Will click away and order it.
