TN: 2004 Luís Pato Vinha Formal

In a terrific spot right now. Out of the gate it had a killer nose of sweet tangerine, ginger and Turkish delight, warming up to notes of honey and beeswax while remaining firmly on the fresh, youthful side of the spectrum. It felt like a ‘great wine’ greeting card, and a testament to how rewarding patience can be when cellaring it. The end palate was less spectacular, with fine cut and acidity but lacking a bit in persistence - perfectly lively but not especially layered. Nevertheless I thought this was a remarkably overachieving bottle and a beautiful food wine with Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá. A gift from Luís Pato himself.

Never heard of this one, Tomas. Is this an orange wine, or a rose?

It’s a white!

Wine sounds good. Not including the fortified ones, don’t read much TNs on Portuguese whites with some age. Would have loved to see a photo of the Bacalhau .

The only Portuguese white with a proven history of improving significantly with several decades of bottles age is the Buçaco. There are other noteworthy examples from the Caves São João. The jury is still out on how the best Encruzados of today will behave in the long run, but I’m optimistic.
