2019 Ser Cinsault Old Vine Bechtold Vineyard - USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi Mokelumne River (6/23/2022)
Berserker day purchase. Popped and poured at cellar temp. Very cloudy appearance, pale cranberry red color. Peppery red fruit and a little camphor on the nose. Nice vibrant red fruit and some savory spice on the palate with a good crisp acidic finish. Might benefit from a little chill as a summer red picnic wine. Food versatile.

But there is one ancient vine vineyard – Bechthold Vineyard that stands apart from the rest. That’s because the twenty-five acre own-rooted Bechthold vineyard, planted in 1886 by German immigrant Joseph Spenker, is the oldest continuously farmed vineyard in Lodi.

Really nice wine though. So is the Cab Pfeffer - I brought it to taste with a few friends and she gained some new fans.
The zin vines are babies at 120 years old.
The 2019 Bechthold cinsault (or cinsaut, depending on the winery) vintage was very light in color and style. The 2016 vintage produced much bigger wine, lots of spice. Not familiar with 17 or 18. Some wineries passed on their allocation for 2020 because of smoke taint, but Estate Crush in Lodi made a very nice rose with it. The word in Lodi is it’s older than any currently farmed cinsault in France or anywhere else, making it the oldest in the world. No phylloxera in Lodi. Very sandy soils (and hot summers) kept it in check.
