More keisterurp from TheBloodyPulpit:

  1. The Syrah & other varieties in these GSM blends came primarily from LyttonWest, the former NortonRanch. Mostly younger vines. THe Grenache came mostly from the very old Grenache plantings on LyttonEast.
The wines displayed a very strong similarity in style. They spoke mostly of Ridge winemaking and very little Rhonish character. Very atypical of other Calif GSM Rhone blends. To me, the LyttonSprings Syrah just has a somewhat different Syrah varietal character than others grown there in the DryCreekVlly.
My preference of these wines was the '17 & '19, because of their greater intensity & more youthful character. But they all showed that classic Ridge balance & good drinking upon release.
For a long time, I was not a fan of the Ridge Rhone wines. They were much different than other Calif versions & were dominated by the Ridge wine wine making style. Since then, I’ve made my peace w/ the Ridge Rhone Reds. They are simply Ridge’s expression of those Rhone varieties, unlike most other made in Calif, but still good expressions of Ridge Reds.

Thanks Tom. We just crushed two bottles of the 2019 last week. I bought them because of of the relatively high percentage of Syrah which I find pretty stellar. As a Z-List member I wish it was easier to buy the Lytton Estate Syrah! Maybe I should just ask haha.

Edit: Sorry, I thought I read one of the TN’s was 2018.

How many different bottlings of this does Ridge do a year?

I was at Monte Bello in October and we split a bottle of '18 GSM but it was 59%/27%/14% and 13.8% ABV.

My experience with these wines is very similar to yours Tom, except I find that the dominance of the Ridge style creates a somewhat muddy-feeling wine without a clear identity when applied to these Lytton Estate Rhone blends. Nice drinking, but a little unsatisfying when compared to the singularity of their Zins/field blends/Monte Bello wines.

I’ve found the Rhone blends from Ridge to be very ‘meh’. Its possible its the style but more likely the fruit source just isn’t all that stellar for those varieties. In any case I wish this GSM blend didn’t come in ATP orders. I opt out of it now. It seems like a perfect sort of wine to sell in the tasting room.

Meh, Cris??? Perhaps…perhaps not. The wines are distinctively Ridge reds. But they are not as varietally well defined, as well-delineated, as recognizably as the Rhone reds as
from other producers.
As far as the fruit source, the DCV Benchland may be a bit warm for Syrah, but not warmer than many other Syrah sites in Calif. Like, say, ShenandoahVlly or PasoRobles or Rockpile or Lodi.
As for the Grenache, that variety is perfectly well-suited for the DCV Benchland. Their Grenache block on LyttonEast is one of the oldest plantings in all Calif…beautiful OV Grenache.
I would absolutely love to see what Morgan or Mike could do with some of those grapes. The Ridge Grenache just doesn’t deliver on what the pedigree of the grapes would suggest.
But do you want a Syrah that shouts Syrah. Or shouts Ridge Red. Both are, to me, perfectly valid expressions of Syrah.

I think a real 'challenge here is the reputation of a winery and how stellar it does with most varieties and the expectation that one will find the same with whatever they make.

I really enjoy their wines but have found their Rhone blends to be a bit ‘muddled’ as well. They simply have not been ‘distinctive’ enough to me. That is not to say that they are not well made; that is not to say what others may find. But with so many other wonderful domestic Rhone blends available, I simply would not be as excited about purchasing these as I am about other wines in their lineup. And that statement goes for a few other wineries that are spoken of often on here as well.

Carry on . . .

Well, I thought I was agreeing with you. Its an Occam’s Razor kind of thing. Excellent producer making wines that are less than one would think they should be. Yet there are Syrahs from other parts of the state that are much better than ‘meh’. Other Rhone blends that at least elicit some interest. The fruit source is part of a vineyard known for great Zin blends. I’ve yet to here about anyone else making terrific Rhone blends from that immediate area.
