TN: Two Carlisle & Two Bedrock Syrahs...(short/boring)

We tasted these Syrahs the other week:

  1. Carlisle Syrah PelkanRanch/KnightsVlly (14.9%; 190 cs) 2009: Very dark color w/ slight bricking; slight reductive strong peppery/blackberry/Syrah/spicy rather toasty/oak/smokey fairly complex beautiful nose; slightly tart rather pungent/smokey/Rhonish strong blackberry/spicy/Syrah/peppery some toasty/oak fairly complex flavor w/ light tangy tannins; very long/lingering very spicy/Syrah/peppery rather toasty/smokey/oak finish w/ light tannins; still loads of Syrah fruit & in great shape but probably not going to get much better; no signs of over the hill. $40.00

Carlisle Syrah RadiantRidgeVnyd/BennettVlly (14.9%; 380 cs) 2018: Dark color; strong blackberry/spicy/Syrah slight peppery/c-c light toasty/oak some ripe/boysenberry lovely nose; fairly tart/tangy strong blackberry/Syrah/spicy/peppery light toasty/oak flavor w/ modest tangy tannins; very long very spicy/Syrah/blackberry/bit peppery some toasty/oak w/ light tannins; a bit on the simple side for a Carlisle Syrah & not shows much c-c character; nice Syrah but just that.

Bedrock Syrah Weill a Way Vnyd/SonomaVlly/SonomaCnty (14.5%) 2018: Very dark color; strong blackberry/Syrah/spicy some toasty/oak bit simple pleasant nose; bit soft strong blackberry/spicy/Syrah some toasty/oak fairly classic Bedrock Syrah bit simple flavor w/ modest tangy tannins; very long strong Syrah/blackberry/ripe/spicy some toasty/oak finish w/ some tannins; a bit on the simple side right now but should show some evolution in a few yrs; a quite pleasant classic Bedrock Syrah but just that. $55.00

Bedrock Syrah HudsonVnyd South/T’n’S Blocks/Carneros (14.5%; Farmed by LeeHudson) 2020: Very dark color; strong c-c/Syrah/blackberry/peppery strong Carneros/c-c/black olive tapenade light toasty/oak bit complex nose; fairly tart/tangy bit lithe/wirey strong blackberry/boysenberry/Syrah/ripe bit toasty/oak strong Carneros/black olive tapenade fairly complex flavor w/ modest tangy tannins; very long/lingering strong blackberry/Syrah/ripe strong c-c/black olive tapenade complex finish w/ some tannins; lots of Carneros/c-c/black olive tapenade character; a classic Hudson Syrah that’ll benefit from 2-5 yrs of age. $45.00

  1. A pretty classic set of Carlisle & Bedrock Syrahs. I was impressed by the Carlisle/Pelkan Syrah as not showing its age at all. My favorite, though, was the Bedrock/Hudson. Love the c-c/black olive tapenade character in it.
