Harlan vs Promontory

Quick, question. Have had Promontory, in what ways does the wine differ from Harlan, which I have never had.

I have had both but not side by side. Both are rich (dark fruit) and smooth wines (when they have age). I would put them in the same bucket. I would maybe say Promontory is a little heavier and touch more tannins (but that could vary year to year?)

Both wines need a lot of age. Built to last decades.

Promontory is more elegant and refined with perhaps better purity of fruit. Harlan is more powerful, richer, denser, and concentrated. In a way, think of Harlan as Latour and Promontory as Lafite.

I was going to use the purity of fruit descriptor on Promontory as well. I had it for the first time recently, and that’s really what struck me above all else.

Harlan is about $400 more expensive…
