TN: 1994 Heitz Cellar Pinot Noir (USA, California, Napa Valley)

Time flies…bought a few of these, along with some 93’s 10yrs ago…had a 93 8yrs ago, and haven’t had another bottle since! SO many wines, So little time. First try at the 94…and as with the 93, sourced from the Oak Knoll AVA…starting out a little muddled and muted…aged bricking, maybe too maderized? Air is your friend here…as it awakens, starting to now show life…tertiary and sous bois for sure…yet there is some wonderful cinnamon and sandalwood spice coming through…dusty earth tones, cherry pixy stick, dried tobacco leaves…like the 93…very silky smooth tannins, if any at all…yeah, there still is…more dusty and spicy like an aged Cab…fruit is dried and savory with cherry/strawberry/plum/rhubarb…tart and alive blood orange and cherry skin acidity…decayed leaves, leather…really nice savory spiced finish. Doesn’t really scream “Heitz”…no Martha’s magic here…yet for what was probably just a simple bottling of Pinot at the time, not really meant to age or impress…it really is a fine tasting bit of old school class and history…very satisfied with this bottle!
