TN: 2016 Aurélien Chatagnier St. Joseph La Sybarite

Is this the best Saint Joseph from the north? Right now I’m really struggling to name a better one. I think I need to make it a priority to acquire more while ”nobody” knows about it.

On the nose as dark as midnight with notes of rich, intense blackberry fruit, smoke, wet forest floor and granite for days. There is a distinct sauvage quality to it with a floral nuance and just lots of character and depth. Hauntingly beautiful aromatics. Surprisingly full on the palate and almost luscious on the entry yet it is not weighty or overblown. Midway through the tannins kick in with quite a bit of bite and grip, causing the wine to tighten up considerably towards the finish. Really great concentration and depth. Obviously very young with a ton of promise but I can’t help but love it right now for its power, top notch dark fruit and vibrancy.
