TN: 2000 Chateau Musar (Lebanon, Bekaa Valley)

  • 2000 Chateau Musar - Lebanon, Bekaa Valley (12/25/2021)
Summary: 3 hour slo-ox remains the sweet spot for ~20 year old Musar in my experiences. A delightfully delicious wine of red plums and strawberries with more plushness and thinner body than the more typical rustic and meaty on the mouthfeel. Another gem from one of my favorite wine makers.

Corked popped and crumbled at top and broke off cleanly at the bottom. Soaked ⅛ inch. Was able to extract remaining cork without falling into the bottle. Very aromatic nose immediately wafts from the bottle. First 1oz sample at 90 minutes: lovely aromas of smokey red fruits. On the palate rustic red fruits with a soft minerality. The wine is drinking great and should only get better in the hours ahead. At 2 hours aromas remain delightful while the wine softens on the palate with notes of strawberries and red plums. Delicious savory finish. At 3 hours the softness continues to develop with a fantastic plushness on the mouthfeel allowing the plums and strawberries to dance lovingly on the palate. Mouthfeel was reminiscent of the Coombsville region in Napa, California – which is a high compliment. Nice medium length finish. A fantastic showing for Christmas dinner. Served with Musakhan (Sumac chicken), cardamom brown rice, and oven roasted sweet potatoes spiced with salt, pepper, cinnamon, smoked paprika, and cayenne. (93 pts.)
