Wineries to visit in or near McMinnville?

I’m looking for tasting options in McMinnville or within a 15 minute drive. 2nd week of December. Goodfellow is not an option as they are not taking visitors in Dec. Eyrie is closed as well.

I’ve read the Oregon wine country threads and picked my hotel (3rd Street Flats) and made dinner reservations based on suggestions there. I don’t want to read through them again for winery suggestions and would appreciate suggestions from locals.

Thanks, Tom

You’ll get so many wonderful winery recommendations…Beaux Freres being on the top of my list if you can get an invite…but please, take some time to visit the Air and Space Museum where Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose is…what an amazing experience.

you will have basically all wineries in Carlton and Dundee at your disposal if 15 minutes is your limit and most of Newberg. Is there anything in specific that you’re looking for?

We are more than 20 minutes from downtown Mac (as is Beaux Freres, obviously). Daytime with some traffic probably 25 to 30. Even Dundee Hills will push 20+ minutes with any amount of traffic. If it’s a hard line on 15 minutes it would seem the downtown Carlton scene would be the best bet.

I hear this is quite good in Mac, Hi Fi.

Maysara would be high on my list
…Momtazi Vineyard is a gorgeous, respected vineyard.
Friend, Winemaker Tahmiene Momtazi is a wonderful person, miss her.

+1 on Martin Woods

We enjoy tasting at Westrey but I’m not sure they take reservations. I would call them to find out. Wines are excellent and the prices are reasonable. We also like tasting at Hundred Suns.

Y’all have traffic jams? Alas, another vision of a bucolic paradise challenged by modern realities.

99 has been under some major construction as of late.

oooh boy do we. And our share of “niceholes”, which never fail to screw things up.

It’s not the Bay Area but we certainly have traffic born of wineries, casinos, the Coast, a seemingly weird amount of traffic accidents (yamcowatch.com) and unending construction on 2-lane highways. Navigable? Certainly, especially if you know the spots to avoid and the back roads around things. If you’re talking about a guaranteed under 15 minute travel time from downtown Mac it takes a lot of things out of the equation because of all that. If there’s flexibility, then mostly all the above isn’t normally a big deal.

Is a “niceholes” someone who goes the speed limit and lets other people cut in? We visit the WV twice a year, and while we are firm believers in going at least the posted speed limit, we consistently find that we’ll have someone driving up our “nicehole” unless we are speeding by at least fifteen mph. We also see at least one crash or car in the ditch each day.

I’m thinking more along the lines of people who don’t take the right of way, and are generally oblivious to the conditions around them.

Vidon Vineyards. Small producer, great fruit, and great views. New owners Dru and Erin Allen are fervent about raising the quality bar even higher.

Not local yet but I know the area. If you must limit to 15 minutes:

Absolutely Hi-Fi Wine bar. Tasted the Martin Woods wines at the winery last weekend. All were good and reasonably priced. Loved the Rocks District Syrah which had an old-world tilt.

Brittan Vineyards is in town.

Durant is less the 15 minutes. Not a big fan in the pinots but enjoy the Chardonnay. Since Goodfellow sources fruit from here, you can make a mental comparison. Also a chance to try some olive oil milled on site, although most of the olives are from California.

Carlton Wine Makers Studio- Totally random what’s being poured that day but there are some solid producers making there wine there.

I have an appt at Brittan a week from Saturday. How does Hi-Fi work? Is it a wine bar that also pours Martin Woods?

Thanks,
Tom

Exactly! Evan Woods opened it a few months ago and it would be the best wine bar in Portland if it was here. Great, rotating btg list (naturally with Martin Woods wines being featured) and a killer bottle list that is priced extremely reasonably.

Goodfellow and Heater Allen Brewing are both in central McMinnville and would be my top recommendations.
