How many wine glasses have you broken?

#1 Post by B. Davies »

I'm fairly lucky. I've only broken about 3 glasses total.

Although this topic reminds me of a woman who rammed her cart into the endcap and the whole display of wine and olive oil crashed down. That was a nightmare to clean.

I'm around 2-3 ever, as well. Always hand wash.

Roughly my lifetime total is Alfert's weekly total.

My current theory is that in every six you buy, 1 or 2 are weak or flawed and break quickly, thereafter they last for years. I always buy enough to take this into account for the final number needed.

Four of my own glasses. Two when a shelf from my cupboard broke and crushed two Riedels into atoms, so not really anything to do with me, just happened to witness it. And then one by accidentally tipping a glass that was standing in the kitchen sink and one that was standing on the corner of a table.

And then I've broken one or two when drying offsite glasses after a tasting. But considering I've cleaned and dried thousands of glasses after tastings, the collateral damage is remarkably small. I tend to err on the side of caution and careful cleaning.

Dozens if not hundreds. I’ve done it every way imaginable. The latest was when I went to put a bottle in my carry bag without looking to go out to dinner and forgot I had a glass in that slot. Smashed a Zalto universal to a million pieces. Did not mention that episode to my wife…

I was going to guess 10, but realized:
-I’ve purchased a 6-pak and 2 x 8-paks of Riedel Bordeaux glasses, but only have 10 left. (14 broken!)
-purchased a 6 & 8 pak of Riedel Sauv Blanc glasses, have 8 left. (6)
- purchased at least 18 Schott Zwiesel Burgundy, gave 4 away, still have 12. (2 broken)
-remember breaking a few Jouet Flutes.
No broken Zaltos or Grassls.

So I’m at 25 that I can remember!!

The last year, zero. The key is using a dishwasher, hand washing is hopeless (at least for me with clumsy hands).

Todd and Charlie are right, I easily win this one. I snap them a pic every time. It’s shocking how often and how many. I’m a Neanderthal.

And the worst part is, I do not even wash them.

Hmm, perhaps that all ties in. Use it, break it, don’t have to clean it.

All but 8....and those are all of random vintage and brand at this point.

This question is like asking "How many of your romantic relationships of yours are currently intact."

What Craig said above- house rule is wine glasses do not get washed until the next day. Still can't count how many we have broken over the years.

Personally, only one and that was wiping the rim that had some sediment from a bad pour. Snapped the stem and the rest shattered into a million pieces(although I like the atoms reference). My hands are not built or wash these glasses so my wife has broken about 7. Not a blame, just a function of time.

Probably about a dozen over the past 20 years. But the only four that really hurt were the 4 Gabriel Glas Gold’s that I killed in less than a two year span. Having much better luck with Grassl Liberte’s (thus far)

I wear gloves when I hand wash, but only broke a few washing. The drying I’ve had plenty of breaks and an occasional cut, almost always due to distracted drying. Had two glasses break in a row with the same exact break.

So many that the rule in our house is that I am not allowed to wash glasses the same night I drink out of them, regardless of how much has been consumed. Sadly, that rule hasn’t stopped the carnage.

I had a Riedel break on me the other day. Looked similar. As soon as the water (which was not hot) hit the bowl, a big chunk just broke off.

2. One fell in my dishrack due to bad positioning, and the other broke in my hand during an in-store tasting of Sauvignon Blancs years ago. The bleeding from the latter resulted in my most embarrassing wine experience ever - at least I did not have to go to an urgent care clinic or a hospital on account of some Napa SB.

It's been 14 years now since I've broken a wine glass.

I snap them a pic every time. It’s shocking how often and how many. I’m a Neanderthal.

That would make a great thread...broken stem pics.
My weirdest break
That’s a common break for me.
