TN: 2003 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

This is an ‘03? Sure, it’s got a ton of ripe fruit. But it’s a yummy bowl of crisp strawberries and red cherries, without any stewed or jammy flavors and a great balance of sweet and sour. There’s an earthy character and a hint of a celery-like note. Transparent ruby color but middle- rather than lightweight, with great persistence and grip from pillowy tannin. A touch of tarry scent. Surprisingly primary for an 18-year-old wine—I’d’ve thought this was aged 5-10, from a less structured grape than Sangiovese. This is only at the start of its drinking window, and hopefully will unfurl more complexity in the decades to come. (92 pts.)
