TN: 2017 Bevan Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard

  • 2017 Bevan Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville (9/13/2021)
Sometimes it’s time for something luscious, a bit over the top. This fit the bill without getting too extreme. The combination of Bevan exuberance with 2017 understatement made for a balanced, but still rich expression of Cabernet. Blackberry compote, baking spice and a Syrah-like road tar finish kept me coming back sip after sip, and glass after glass. It was just too easy to drink, which was exactly what I wanted!

Sounds wonderful. I enjoyed the 15 and I have the 18 waiting.

I had the ‘18 two weeks ago, patience is warranted and will be rewarded. Time to try out the ‘17 based on this note

I prefer Bevan in less ripe vintages, as it tempers Russell’s exuberance.

Is 2017 considered a less ripe, “understated” vintage in Napa? I thought 2017 to be defined by horrendous heat spikes and high alcohol?

yes. in the same vein as '11, for the most part.

It would be interesting to taste this alongside the 2017 Tench Vineyards estate wine that’s made for them by Bevan.
