TN: Four 2018 JJ Prüm Spätlesen

Happy to do another multi-pronged tasting via Peter Pan Bistro here in town, and were lucky to be joined by JJ Prum’s export manager Mihailo Martinovic to talk us through the estate and the wines (and to give us tips on which order to try them in!). I will say that the 2018s seem to be wanting for energy and vibrancy, but these are still delicious and pedigreed.

  1. Bernkasteler Badstube Spätlese

The cleanest; more white flowers and grassy/lightly herbal, just an underpinning of lightly tropical fruit. The palate is the most flinty and lean.

  1. Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese

Most exuberant/expressive nose, certainly more golden than the Bernkasteler, quite round, nice weighty mouthfeel, mango on the finish; a bit lacking in energy and lift but quite wide open.

  1. Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese

Also somewhat grassy on the nose, delicate and floral, leaner and fresher than the Zeltinger, a step up in elegance; there’s something so lightly herbal on the finish, like…microgreens?

  1. Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese

Clearly reserved, and by far the most focused. The core is by far the most tense of the group, and the most energetic; needs time, far more than the others. Mineral, deep, classy, emotionally distant. Like a garden waiting to bloom; so, so floral, with just a beautiful slice of white peach. Crystalline.
