Issues with Grassl glasses breaking?

#1 Post by Dan M »

We’ve had our Liberte’s for just a few months and one broke in the sponge while hand washing it. We’ve only used them about 10 times.

Just curious if this is a common issue? Defective? Need to go the gym less?

It's not recommended to hand wash them as they are very easy to break while hand washing.

No issues, and I always hand wash them, since I do not have a dishwasher.

I hand wash ours every day-I’ve never broken one washing or drying.

I have broken 2 or 3 in other ways that were completely my fault. Generally involves trying to balance a decanter upside down on a soft drying mat. I wouldn’t suggest doing this.

You must have a delicate touch. I've broken 3 or 4 hand washing, including crushing one in my hand just holding it and squeezing a little too tight. And I've heard of many others breaking them hand washing and clearly remember reading in multiple places that it's not recommended.

Dishwasher for everything and its never broken a thing. Grassl, Zalto, Sensory all go thru the dishwasher.

Snapped a Zalto Bordeaux one time hand washing and have been dishwasher ever since.

We dishwash ours. I’ve broken two, one was dropped. Many, many small pieces.

Interesting. I knew they were dishwasher safe but wish I knew dishwashing was encouraged. Seems like my wife basically crushed it in her hand.

I’ll guess we’ll need to buy another since I assume Grassl is not in the business of replacing broken glasses.

So you’re saying putting these in the dishwasher is the preferred way?

I’ve had 3 break-one I dropped, 1 broke because of poor placement of a plastic cutting board in the dishwasher, and one because a neighbor kid took a bite out of a Cru because it was so thin and she wanted to see what would happen.

I used a sponge once and had it expand in the opening and cause it to break. Now I use those Swedish washcloth things and they work perfectly.

To avoid breakage during washing, I just use them once, and toss into recycling. (jk)

Yes, I think it’s preferred for most of these “modern” glasses like Zalto, Gabriel and others.

We have a replacement policy. Reach out to me privately.
Chris@cjfselections.com

Mouth blown stems, regardless of who makes them, are fragile in many ways and durable in others.

It really has to do with where you’re exerting force.

The exterior is pretty resilient. Almost such that the glasses have a ‘bounce’ to them

Stick your finger in the bowl with a sponge to get lipstick; you’ll snap the hell out of it.

What I do is this;

Dawn has some ‘power wash’ detergent gimmick. But it’s a spray foam version of the soap. I rinse my glasses -and use the foam to coat the rim. Let it sit for a bit and then head to the dishwasher.

The next best is a suction cup in the sink with a bottle brush design.

But they break. Are some glasses more fragile? Yep. Zalto Bordeaux (too top heavy), Grassl Cru (bowl shape is delicate if you clean the inside bowl by hand) are the most fragile for sure.

If you have a glass that disintegrates in your hand, and it’s a Grassl, if possible, use your kitchen scale and weigh the parts. We have specs. Glass out of spec (too light) is something I’ll happily work with you on. Any glass we have a replacement policy at wholesale.

You won’t get that with Zalto or Gabriel

I think the newest releases have a little more glass than the early releases. Last week I unpacked 2 new Mineralites and set them on the counter. My wife managed to somehow knock them both over, but luckily neither broke. I don't believe earlier releases with the thinner glass would have survived that episode.

Smaller glasses; ZW, G Mineralité; are very durable. Large bowls and fancy designs are less so. It’s that simple.

Remember; these glasses are blown in wooden molds. The first glass in a mold and the last glass before a mold is retired will be different sizes and weights.

You can make a steel mold and then line it with cork but we aren’t confident the feel of the glass is as good.

Besides; you Zalto fans won’t need to worry about the cost of your glasses. Spieglau just threw some shade at them and has launched a machine made version that is identical (to me). That should be a fun Teutonic legal battle.

I hand wash all my stems. They tend not to sit super well in my dishwasher.

I cut a sponge in half lengthwise to use to hand wash my stems. That way the sponge isn’t exerting too much pressure on the bowl. I minimally use the sponge to get rid of tougher stains, but mostly just use hot soapy water and rinse it plenty of times. Never broken one washing it this way. I’ve broken more stems polishing them than I have hand washing them.

I had issues with Gabriel Glas (not gold) but nothing with Grassl. I almost only use the dishwasher too.

Too funny — this is my go-to as well. I hand wash my stems with this exact brush, and it’s been all good so far (5+ years).

dishwasher is the best. I tend to rinse mine daily and use the dishwasher a couple of times a week. honestly I think the most important part of cleaning is handled during drying/polishing which is best done by hand with a cloth rag and is removing the fingerprints and water residue.

and yes, Chris has mentioned some of the early the Grassl glasses can break because they were too light with glass. personally I have a couple of those and I love them for the light weight while drinking, so I'm super careful not to break them when washing because I don't want to lose them!

I get them 90% of the way clean with scalding hot water and a drop of soap (unless we let a red wine dry in the bottom). Then it's just a matter of cleaning the outside, rim, and base and for that we use the white foam champagne flute brush. Has worked pretty well with no breakage. I have some citric acid I use to dissolve more stubborn stains.

Dishwasher is rarely empty enough to do just a glass load so I haven't tried that.

This. Riedel Somm Bdx and Burgundy; Sensory; and Grassl all go in the dishwasher. Only broke one glass -- because I forgot to raise the rack to provide enough clearance for the stem. Dishwasher gets them cleaner than I can by hand; takes less effort; and except for the one mistake on my part, has never resulted in breakage. I have had a number break with handwashing in the past.

You guys must be super gentle. I just compared my purchasing with what we have left. We've broken 3 Cru and 2 Liberte in a little more than 14 months. I don't care though they are the best and we'll keep buying them, and hopefully be more careful.

I bounced a Zalto Bordeaux off the table thanks to our toddler. She drilled it with a foam ball (had probably 2-3oz of wine in it) and it fell over and bounced up off the table (so it actually hit the table twice) and didn't break. Bought a lotto ticket same day, but only got lucky the once.

I've had more Grassl, Zaltos, and GGGs broken by handwashing than by dishwasher and it isn't even close. I've had one dishwasher break that I couldn't rationalize as user error in like 4 years across those glasses. Any other breaks were placement issues (standing up too tall on top rack and snapped neck when closing drawer; place too loosely so two glasses whack into each other; place stem near silverware and have knife handle whack into base). I had, after numerous warnings, have to threaten to start charging both our nanny and maid for broken stems because despite me telling them to just put them in the dishwasher, they'd try to wash by hand and break the bowl or torque the stem causing a break. It's like a 7:1 ratio of stemware breaks hand:dishwasher.

That's consistent with my experiences working a wine bar, by the way. We had an industrial steam/wash for stems. You'd inevitably have the only breaks towel drying...

Not with Grassl, but my wife and I have already each broken one Glasvin while washing (on top of the one that arrived broken) --- those things scare me!

Ok
Very confusing as to the best way to wash.
We have purchased and broken 18 GG gold. Some in the dishwasher and some by hand washing. Also one setting down on the table.
We signed up for the Grand Reserve card in order to get Grassl glasses. We received the 2 Liberte immediately. We used points to order 2 Cru and 2 1855’s.
We were concerned about using the dishwasher so I have been hand washing all the Grassl glasses the last six weeks. I spray the powerwash dawn that Chris mentioned. I swirl and manually massage the inside and then let them air dry. So far no broken glasses.

We are very happy with the results.
No broken glasses and the glasses are sparkling clean!

We love all the Grassl glasses!
The 1855’s are our favorites. That said we are happy to have an assorted dozen on the way!

Can you put Grassl and Zalto glasses on the bottom rack of the dishwasher? The glasses are too tall for my top rack.

Definition series, it looks like. Doesn’t seem like you can buy it though.
Ye of little faith....
I mean right now. I wouldn’t mind some nice machine made glasses.

We (I) broke all 4 GG Gold's that I bought within a year of purchasing. Mostly stem/base breaks. Replaced with Liberte's over two years ago and we're still pristine with those..

We put the Grassl in the dishwasher, but it’s a new high end Bosch with a top rack that has one side with holders for wine glasses. The old Asko couldn’t accommodate wine glasses so I used to hand wash only. I wash the wine glasses with the regular load but we typically have light loads.
Any one in need of a new dishwasher should check out the threads here.
I could never get my decanters clean but finally put one in the dishwasher and now it’s like new.
The Bosch has water softener, but I don’t use a rinse aid.
Who uses a rinse aid and why? Yes, I know it’s recommended by Bosch but the less chemicals the better.

Use my Grassl glasses 3-4 days a week for over a year now. Always dishwasher (Bosch). Have broken 2. One mystery break in the dishwasher and one related to human stupidity. I have given these glasses as gifts to friends and they all are scared to use them for fear of breakage. It doesn’t matter how many times I explain to them that they are more durable than they appear, they just can’t seem to grasp it.
