2021 Under $15.00 Wine Thread

#1 Post by John Glas »

List your wine and where to purchase. If anything those in the local area will benefit if they don't ship.

2015 Davenport Cellars Patch - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley (2/19/2021)
Day 1: Very good featuring cherry, coffee beans, earth, spice and dust. Medium finish. 91 points
Day 2: Coffee beans, sour cherry, earth, spices and savory finish. Very tasty.
Recommendation: $10 a bottle and 91 points works for me. Hard to believe any of this wine is left. (91 points)

Widely available and very enjoyable daily drinkers from Landskroon (Paarl, SA): Chenin Blanc, Rose of Pinotage.
Regularly on sale for $9.99 at the Wine Shop at Byerlys in White Bear Lake.

My best < $15 bottle of wine I got within in the last year was the 2014 Result of a Crush for $14.99 at Full Pull. Great bargain and excellent wine. It has a 91.2 average on Cellar Tracker.

I was gonna say Domaine Guion, one of the great QPRs in the world of wine, but just saw that this delicious Loire Cab Franc has jumped significantly by a whole stinkin dollar up to $16. It is outrageous! Kidding aside, this is a really good wine that can also age so effortlessly. I’ve had bottles with 15-30 years on them, oldest being a 1985 several years ago.

Just checked. I paid $12.98 for the 2017. Inflation!

The ‘08 is great right now, with no signs of decline. String showing for a relatively weak vintage. I think Chambers closed those out for $9.99 when the ‘09s came in.

Continuing with the Loire theme, I’d add the Chidaine Touraine Blanc, which was $15 and quite a tasty SB. Short tasting note below:
  • 2019 François Chidaine Sauvignon Touraine - France, Loire Valley, Touraine (2/17/2021)
Very light straw with a green tinge in terms of color. On the nose, this is definitely an AFWE style SB - it’s not overly fruity and grassy the way some new world SBs taste, rather it’s almost like a still champagne - very minerally, dry, flinty, and having notes of green apple, biscuit, white peach, flint, and chalk. Striking acidity on the palate and super dry.

Really liked this wine and at $15, it’s hard to beat for a daily drinker. Great with food, particularly sushi. Will certainly buy again. (90 pts.)

  • 2017 Château Floreal Laguens Bordeaux Superieur - France, Bordeaux (2/20/2021)
VERY good for the money. Decanted for 2 hours.

Not very complex and very consistent all the way through. Wonderful nose of crushed red berries and wet rocks, oaky undertones too. Palate mimics the nose; medium body, medium acidity, smooth tannins. Finish is dry with an rocky earthy feel and with singing red fruits.

Drink now. Probably won’t benefit from time in the cellar. Very approachable now. (91 pts.)

Morisfarms - Morellino di Scansano (sangiovese from the seaside slopes of Tuscany), widely available for less than $15. There's a long track record of quality and value here.

Touraine is a good appellation for low cost, delicious SB. There is a communal producer (Oisly Thesee) that some vintages puts out a nice wine at sub $10. Domaine du Vissoux (Chermette) has some nice entry level Beaujolais that may still be under the threshold.

Perennially good values, but Gruet NV Brut Rose ($12) and Substance Cabernet Sauvignon ($10) both performed admirably last night. The Gruet was particularly impressive.

You can source CS Substance Cab for $10? That is a $18-20 bottle in my neck of the woods. Interesting. Good value (in most years) either way but still, $10 is stupid good.

$15 on Wine.com, then as part of a 20/50 or 50/150 coupon, knocks it down to $10. True for shipping to most states. The 2018 has really impressed me.

Substance at $10 is great. Best price I see in Minneapolis is around $13. Gruet was around $11 but the mail in rebates brought it down to $8.

2018 Joel Gott California Cabernet Sauvignon. I know I'll get killed for this reco. Nonetheless, declassified Napa Valley fruit from some very nice vineyards due to a very large crop, but also including other normal contributors from NorCal. Its my house wine and cellar defender for the moment. $12 at Safeway. Their 2019 Sauvignon Blanc was #21 on Spectators Top 100 this year. [cheers.gif]

Thanks Ben, my dad was asking for recos for inexpensive bottles at Total Wine near him, and I added that to the list with some Marietta Old Vines Red and Catena Malbec. I wish there was more there to recommend; he doesn't get out much, it's almost walking distance, and curbside pickup is handled quite well.

Not sure where to post this one, 2017 Omero Cellars Gamay Willamette Valley bulls at not really under 15. It’s 15 exact and available Mwcwine.com. Not sure how many bottles are left. Sold domestic gamay reminds me of a Morgan or MaV cru bojo. Probably not one to cellar, just to drink.

Wholly agree with this. I also enjoy the previously mentioned Vajra Rosso.

I also enjoy the Callabretta Calla Calla, an interesting Etna multi-vintage blend. Rustic compared to most Etna wines but another great pizza wine and silly value.
A number of good roses can be found under $15 that I enjoy, but that depends quite a lot on vintage. Schloss Gobelsburg Cistercien is usually very good.
Pepiere and Landron base level muscadet for whites.

I really like Collestefano Verdicchio di Matelica at around $14.00. For a step up, Bucci Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore, but you'll probably have to go up to around $20 for that one.

Here's two of my California cellar defenders.

Image

2018 Cline Ancient Vines Contra Costa County Zinfandel. (And not because I live in C C County.) The 2016 was rated 91pts by Wine Spectator which I thought was too high. This one isn’t as sweet, is very smooth, fruity and drinkable without any rough edges. Excellent for the price. It's only $12 at Total Wines.

2017 La Crema Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, $16 at Costco. 91pts Robert Parker and 90pts Wine Spectator. Sorry it's $1 over. Where will the madness stop?

It wasn't too long ago that I could get them for about $12. I just don't think that you can beat them for the price. When you just want to sit down with a nice glass of wine that doesn't require a lot of thought, these fit the bill for me.

Aleks V wrote: February 21st, 2021, 11:19 am Continuing with the Loire theme, I’d add the Chidaine Touraine Blanc, which was $15 and quite a tasty SB.

(90 pts.)

Haven't had the Chidaine Touraine Blanc yet, but the 2018 Chidaine Tourine Rouge was my favorite $15 and under wine last year. It's a blend of Pineau d'Aunis, Cab Franc, and Cot (Malbec). Went surprisingly well with takeout lamb rogan josh. I'll definitely be on the lookout for the 2019.
