Tempting wine purchases you’ve passed on—give others a shot

#1 Post by alan weinberg »

all of us occasionally pass on “deals” and sometimes post them. Let’s have a thread that does so . . . JJ Buckley has a Bitouzet-Prieur Volnay Pitures 2014 for a good deal at $68.94.

Zachy’s, while not generally known for great deals, does have the 2018 Chateau Les Carmes Haut Brion for $125 on sale, which is the lowest I found in the states currently, plus Amex Plat gives you $30 off $150 at Zachy’s right now if you download the offer.

2018 MM Rich at Envoyer today for $400 is a good price. I already have my share from an earlier offer.

im sure you're right. but I know more than a couple people on the list that don't open the emails. I'm not sure how or what kind of mystical powers they have that allow them to do that, but maybe they missed something they really want!

I don’t open the emails for the stuff I don’t want like Riesling. I’ve tried to get them to correctly tailor the emails for me but basically given up.

You should learn to want Riesling. There are absolutely great Rieslings.

Funny I only want Riesling offers and I never get them. Someone told me about a Riesling offer I called them and ordered and have never heard back.

Do they have the ability to tailor lists?

Wow...and $200 seems be be a really good price. To go back in time...all of 7 years: bought the 2008 Burlotto Monvigliero for $60 at HiTimeWine in CA in 2013. It seemed a fair a deal at the time for a solid, traditional producer, and there were still several bottles left in the bin. Also, I remember some 2008 Bartolo on the nearby shelf at $100, but I passed at that price since I had already found some bottles from Envoyer for $80. Oh, those were the good-old days...2013!

ha. You wanna talk good old days and HiTimes? Bought 5 magnums of 1990 La Tâche languishing on shelf in the old “locked area” of HiTimes for $550 each. But this is thread drift.

as someone young in my wine buying career this thread made me think I wanted to start a thread devoted to crazy deals (or what seems like crazy deals now at least) that people have gotten on wines. I never experienced the pre-price explosion time for Piemonte or Burgundy, but would love to live vicariously through others- and plan my trip back in time when I perfect my time machine.

Pre-1997 Liparita wines on Winebid.
They were unrecognized but well-worthy cousins to La Jota.

Does sharing a good deal count? I am fairly new here, but last week I shared a website that had a decent amount of Falkenstein AP 11 "Meyer Nepal". I was going to buy two cases, but the site said they only had 36 bottles so I ordered 6 bottles and shared the site on the boards because I knew others were looking for the wine. It looks like several stores got their shipment so my sharing wasn't as great as I thought, but several people thanked me for sharing and were able to get a case. Made me feel like I made the right choice. Wine is always better shared in my opinion!

Edit- I think I misunderstood the point of the thread. I don't have any new great deals to share right now. The wine I found last week was Falkenstein AP 11 "Meyer Nepal" Riesling at durham.wine. A great price, but more so a hard wine to find up to that point given the 98 point rating from MFW.

Very cool idea! I will definitely scour looking for some good deals.

The Bottle List also has great prices on 2019 Lauer GG's (pre-arrival). Solid 20-25% lower than any other US offers I've seen.

In this case I did not pass, but still giving others a shot!

My first DRC was a 1990 Romanee St Vivant, it was a employee Friday night bottle and we paid $125 which was probably cost. For something more realistic, I remember having multiple vintages of 90's Lafon Volnay Santenots du Milieu on the shelf for $35 and nobody would buy them.

I do like the idea of this thread though, let's keep it up!

Well I, for one, appreciate any tips like this one - too bad this shop doesn't seem to ship out of state or I'd have been all over it.

Wine Club had almost a case total of 2014 Rhys Alpine and Horseshoe Chardonnay the other day for $59.99 a bottle. I didn’t buy but convinced my neighbors to buy some. There are a few still left.

K&L just posted a few Wind Gap and Agharta wines at nice markdowns from "standard" pricing, plus the 2015 Qupé "Sawyer-Lindquist" Marsanne at $20 (citing $28 as regular price).

They also posted the 2018 Theopolis Petite for about the same price as the BD price.

Also a bunch of 2015-2018 Aubert wines but I don't follow them so I don't know if those are a deal or not.
